I was reading and found a lot of info concerning perlite as the bottom layer of a casing. Which would be better Perlite or Vermiculite(if it was done with coco fiber)?-thanks

as the bottom layer... doesn't matter, they are there to do the same thing - act as a water resovoir and they'll both do just that. there's only one difference there and that's the color of the two. so, you really should be asking yourself, "do i want a brown or white layer on bottom."

really though, i'd use vermiculite. perlite is a bit too porous. well not exactly porous, but not dense enough. you want the bottom layer to hold at least some water to hydrate the lower parts of the substrate. perlite will not, the water will just run right to the bottom.
