A quote, so you can meditate on the nature of free will
    #4730912 - 09/29/05 12:16 PM (11 years, 2 months ago)

Here is a nice little quote I found by George Bernard Shaw, who in his time was called the British Nietzsche, from the play he wrote called Man and Superman which was in part inspired by his fascination of the transcendent.

DON JUAN: ...My brain is the organ by which nature strives to understand itself...

DEVIL: What is the use of knowing?

DON JUAN: ...To be able to choose the line of greatest advantage instead of yielding in the direction of least resistance. Does a ship sail to its destination no better than a log drifts nowhither?...
And there you have our difference: To be in Hell is to drift, to be in Heaven is to steer... At least I shall not be bored.

The warriors way. (Interesting coincidence that name Don Juan.)

wow, fascinating idea. But can a log being directed by unseen currents not have the illusion of steering itself?

Do you have a log licence? Is it trained? How about a pic.

Ya'll are funny. What if the drifters think they are steering? And what if the steerers are actually drifting?

haha, indeed. And such is the cosmic joke.

However, one can be one with the Universe and at peace in a dark closet. But wouldn't you rather go outside and feel the warmth of the sun?

The truth is both are necessary.

i agree that knowledge is steering
yet IMO it's still deterministic if you think about it (since the output is the direct result of the input- knowledge vs no knowledge)
determinism & choice
these two concepts go together

I don't completely agree.

Where I do agree is that the choices available to you are determined.

Where I don't agree is that the particular choice that you make is determined.

concave and convex should be considered

the convex is like impression which impinges on the membrane of self

the convex is like expression where the self membrane presses out into the world.

part of the world is a filter against new incoming impressions

concepts are a category of expression - part of the convex that goes out and filters which impressions can be get through to be concave dents in the self membrane.

the self defends against new dents with strong convex patterns of which determinism is certainly one, while choice is always a toss that is up in the air.

so when the coin lands let an impression be made.
