Bluing Mycelium?

I had just started my first time growing mushrooms in my room. Although limited to the supplies I figured I would still give it a try. I went and bought spores off line and got started when they got here. I used the brown rice and the, well that other stuff found at the garden story (sorry had a brain fart). Well anyways my jars were going along nicely but have REALLY slowed down almost to the point it's been 4 weeks and I am still waiting for the bottom of the jars to finish up. Since I am not going to use casing, I am just going to take the cake and put it in a one liter bottle and humidify it and grow them from there. I wanted to wait until I got some of those pin heads all the guide are ranting about. Well while waiting, for a long time, I notice a little bluing of my mycelium. I came to a conclusion that it's from the water droplets touching the mycelium because it seems to come and go on the spots where it's touching a water droplet. Well my question to you guys (finally) is that I ended up birthing one cake early just to see what would happen. Well it's sitting in the humidifier and it's not doing one damn thing. It's not growing or anything. I noticed tonight I dark blue spot of mycelium on the edge of the cake. I figured I would leave it there for now. But does it seem like something is wrong, nothing is growing and it's taking forever it to do anything!?!?!?!?! Thanks for your time guys!!

hey, one suggestion is to try birthing the cake normally, on a layer of moist perlite, and letting it fruit that way. i just started recently as well, and my jar has the same tiny water droplets that i think you're talking about. so far, no signs of any blue, but i don't think they are necessarily contams. this stuff is supposed to bruise blue. what strand are you growing? where did you order your spores? since this is my first time, i don't think i'm going to use casing, unless it turns out to be easier. i will find out after reading more and seeing what available resources i have. but i would definitely try birthing a cake normally. also, make sure you put it in a closed container over moist perlite to keep the humidity. however, fan the container out 2-3 times daily for about 30 seconds to get some fresh air in there. also expose the container to light for about..mmm, i'd say a good 3-4 hours of any type of indirect light (sun, desklight, whatever) should be good enough. and make sure it doesn't get too hot, they can stand a little cold, but make sure it's not too hot. i think 70 degrees is ideal. respond with any quetsions or comments. good luck. peace. ps - do you snowboard? ...of course, this is all jus hypothetical :)

Yea I am not worried that much about the bluing as of the slow development. Man, I look at these other people?s pictures and show this THICK mycelium thriving in these jars after 14 days. WOW, guess it takes practice. I bought the Treasure Coast strand (Not knowing anything about what the easiest strand is) I bought the spores from www.sporechicks.com ran into a little trouble with them from slow delivery, I few e-mails later I had my package shipped next day mail, LOL. Well moving on yea, I will go and get some perlite. I don't have any, maybe that is why it's not doing anything in the bottle. Well thank a lot for the advice. If any one else has anything to say ADD IT! P.S. I'm a big snowboarder, I live in California so I am waiting for the snow to hit the Sierra Mountains. Its snowing hard there now, woohoo

Blue mycelium usually means a lack of water in your cake, at least when it's fruiting. I had a similar problem with my cakes, so I sterilized a syringe full of water ( boil water, draw boiling water into syringe, boil syringe, let cool ) and injected sterile water into my jars. Suddenly, the jars blew up, doubling in size every day. Not sure if that's what your problem is... not sure if what I did was a good idea, either. Entheogenic
