Heckling a terrorist act?

An 82-year old activist who shouted 'nonsense' during Jack Straw's speech on Iraq, was thrown out the Labour Party conference, and detained under the Terrorism Act, before being re-admitted.
It seems to be the UK government has no problem invoking the tremendous powers granted to it by Terrorism legislation to stifle dessent. Was this a glimpse of the future?

Apology or not, they are invoking the Prevention of Terrorism Act at the drop of a hat. When they were passing this draconian legislation they insisted that it would 'only be used in the most serious of cases'. Sorry but, bollocks, they are abusing the powers they have already, and they are saying they want more powers and less accountability.

I've said before that most of this new legislation meant to aid various agencies in the prevention of terrorism is not only not needed but inevitably going to be abused.
You've got no argument from me on your point.
I just wantd to clarify that they did indeed admit to a mistake.
This time.

That article doesn't even refer to the gross misusage of such a bill. It just says "Sorry we removed you". Nothing about the extreme potential for abuse from this bill.

This is just the thin end of the wedge. Blair hasn't even introduced his new, utterly ludicrous "glorifying terrorism" offences yet.

It's laws like that that make me want our leaders to stop taking advice from European governments.

England was stifling dissenters long before the land that was the US was even discovered by columbus. (Yes, I understand the difference between "UK" and England, but there was no UK back then) There's a long line of tradition that involves telling dissenters to shut the fuck up.

But I thought societies became more democratic and free over the course of time, western ones anyway. We are supposed to be a civilized, higher evolution of our forefathers when it comes to civil liberties.
I don't think it is accurate to compare our societies today, with those many hundreds of years ago.

Democracy only works if people aren't complacent, and over time people become extremely complacent. It seems the only thing that can wake them up is to get their asses kicked around by their government for a while.
Unless people make revolutionary actions once in a while, governments can and will become too confident in themselves and begin to do things they have no right to do.

Very true, our countries are due for revolutions, but they can't happen. The government has truly become to strong to overcome.(nukes)

Nukes? Nukes can't fight a revolution. No country would nuke itself to stop a revolution unless their leaders were literally insane.
Although on the other hand, there is a high likelihood that if a nation's populace revolted, the nation's enemies would sieze the opportunity to wage war on them.
