provigil and zoloft
    #4729416 - 09/29/05 03:30 AM (11 years, 11 months ago)

Ok, so, I went to tha doctor this morning and was prescribed Zoloft for depression and Provigil for energy.

But I dont know if I wanna take 'em. I just got clean from all medications, and would like to keep it that way. Would just like some info/experiences anyone has with either of these medications. I dont want to take them and feel like a zombie or something.

So, not sure what to do...
I mean id take tha provigil for tha energy since i dont have none most of tha time, but not sure 'bout tha zoloft.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Please don't take Zoloft. We really don't know about the long term effects all of these dangerous drugs psychiatrists enjoy hurling onto people, and from my own personal experience with Zoloft when I was much younger, it's terrible. Anti-depressants never even worked for me and they don't work for many others. You're more likely to enter a state of apathy than happiness, which is much more dangerous than being sad or depressed.

I'd recommend coffee or tea if you need energy.

Coffee and tea or any caffene for that matter dont work anymore. I think im too tolarant.
And yea, anti-depressants havent ever worked for me either. Maybe thats why im hesitant to start on anyother one. We'll have to see....

Zoloft didn't work out so great for me. I'm not saying flat out don't take it, but if they want to give you 200mg that is too much in my opinion. On 200mg I spent alot of time yawning and twitching, zonked me out pretty bad. I would much prefer taking natural anti-depressants, kanna and chocalate extract worked much better for me than this stuff.

I'd say if you were prescribed by a psychiatrist or psychologist/APRN, then take them and give it a shot.

If your physician prescribed them, I'd say not to.

Lack of energy? Have you had your thyroid checked? Are you eating right? Are you exercising? Does caffeine not stimulate you, as you've taken too much of it over a long period of time? Perhaps your lack of energy could be a dependance on caffeine. If you've recently quit smoking cigarettes, this could also be a factor.

Provigil is generally prescribed for ADD. Zoloft is apt to make you more tired or more stimulated, dependant upon your personal reaction.

If you're depressed, go to out patient therapy // psychiatrist // psychologist. Physicians don't know as much about these drugs and are too quick to prescribe them.

It was prescribed by a psychiatrist, not a physician. And as far as lack of energy .. well, im sure by body doesnt like what i put into it. Lots of caffene, fast food, all kinds of junk. Had all kinds of blood work to check for thyriod, blood sugar levels, etc. All are normal. (except for cholesterol, which is cuz i eat so bad). No, i never exercise anymore.

I dont know, Im still deciding what to do. Have to see how tha next few days go. Im just gonna put it off until i cant anymore or something like that.

"hey doc, i dont know whats wrong with me, im always depressed"...

"here, take this pill that blocks all emotion, and then take some amphetamine, once you run out, come back and pay me 150$ so i can refill your prescription"....

"thanks doc! I knew being depressed didnt have anything to do with the current situation my life is in and that i have/had absolutly no control over my life!"

drugs were not meant to ever solve your life problems. Research some of these drugs before you even think about taking them. They mentally numb you to the point of apathy. Sure your not depressed anymore, but you find that your libido is nil and you are generally apathetic to everything, including your drug addiction.

Keep off the pills, and use them only for recreational purposes.

well, antidepressants turn out horrible for some people and they turn out for the best and help a good deal of people as well. each one works differently for each individual person. and each person will get different results from another person. start low with doses and work up slowly as to avoid side effects best as possible. if one isnt right for you then try another. but to not try it for yourself and listen to people that maybe had a bad experience with them is just stupid if you ask me. ive tried a bunch of them, not on them currently though. i was trying them for chronic pain/depression when i was younger. some were alright and some were very bad. the bad ones i was given way way too high of a dose though and combined two at once so i know thats the reason why.

Have you ever seen the commercial for Zoloft, with their cute catchphrase "when you can figure out whats wrong you can help make it right"?
In my experience with depression, I get caught up in negative thought loops and abandon any hope of changing my life situation to make it better, or to confront any problems I have. Depression can give you a "fuck it, there's no use" kind of attitude, and anti depressants have helped me get out of that so I can think more realistically, rather than strictly pessimistic. These drugs have been helpful to me as a tool, not a cure.
I can understand where Psilocyberin is coming from, and even agree with a bit of it after reading the posts in this thread and the one on alcoholism and addiction, but i thought I'd pipe up because I think this notion is being overlooked.

Eternal1999 - I'm not familiar with Provigil but Zoloft helped me quite a bit when i was younger. If you don't feel comfortable with taking drugs, then I'd say don't take them. I think these drugs only make you feel like a zombie if you don't truly need them.

Best wishes.

See, I agree with that screwjack. I think the advertising and the marketing of these drugs leads people to believe that happiness is in the pill. Taking pills for a short amount of time, which can help you focus or become cognitive enough so that YOU yourself can fix the problem, is ok.
That is kind of like taking pills to go to sleep because you have to wake up early tommorrow.

Doctors hand out pills like candy, especially anti-depressants.  It's a sad reality, but alot of people do need them and benefit from them as well.

Eternal1999, it does take awhile to feel any benefits from these drugs, but speaking from personal experience, If you were to have any serious negative effects from either drug, you'd have experienced them if you've taken either for more than a week or two (which is speaking soley from personal experience, not any credible research).

I took Effexor for a day, and i wigged out, had a huge panic attack and that was the end of that drug for me.

I guess my advice to you is patience is a virtue?

It sucks but if you're experiencing enough misery or pain it's worth it.  Just remember drugs aren't the be all and end all of happiness.  They help you clear your head to figure out what's best for you, and thats about it.  The Eternal1999 I hardly know doesn't deserve to be any zombie dipshit.  Word.

please dont take any products with caffiene in them while you are on provigil.

i made the mistake of having a dunkin donuts late one morning while i was on this medication, my resting heart rate was over 170 beats per minute. it is not enjoyable. the medication by itself does not interfere greatly with the Peripheral nervous system, but in combination with stimulants, it can have an exponential effect on them.

if you have any questions at all about this medicine, ive been on it for quite a long time, and have done alot of research as to how it effects the body...dont hesitate to send me a PM. including for questions regarding interactions with any recreational drugs you might be using. Ive tried just about everything on this, and i know what is good, and what is terribly mind trashing, body destroying, lay in your bed for 5 hours shaking cold throwing up bad.

stay safe brother, this is a serious medication.

Have you gone to a sleep specialist? You might have no energy because you are not cycling through all of the phases of sleep due to a sleep disorder. I used to sleep 12 hours a night and wake up exhausted and I would fall asleep if I sat still for more than five minutes - so I would fall asleep during every class, when i was studying, eating and sometimes i would be driving and then realize that my eyes were closed. Luckily I never got into an accident but every other area of my life suffered dramatically. I went to a sleep doctor and took an overnight test and was diagnosed with narcolepsy. It gave me my life back. Now I can experience it instead of sleeping through it.
I also take Zoloft for clinical depression and it has helped me a lot. I used to take it when I was younger and then I took myself off of it several times with terrible consequences. I recently went back on it though and honestly it doesn't make you feel like a zombie. Its just that when you are depressed you feel your moods in extremes - this is not normal nor is it very helpful. Zoloft doesn't make you happy it balances the chemicals in your brain to a normal level. If there is not a specific problem in your life that is making you depressed and you know that nothing is actually wrong but you are still depressed than a chemical imbalance may be the reason. Its a decision you have to make for yourself but consider everything before deciding. Sure there are a lot of people who are prescribed drugs that they don't need but that doesn't mean that everyone who is prescribed a drug does not need it. Don't make a knee jerk reaction just because people like Tom Cruise want to say that psychiatry is crap. There are plenty of people whose lives have been saved by the very thing that he so nonchalantly condemns.
If you want to talk more I'd be glad too.
Good Luck.

Yeah, ive been to a sleep specialist about 4 or 5 months ago. They made me stay overnight and sleep with all these wires everywhere. It wasnt fun and i hope i dont have to do it again. Everything came back normal. I had hoped they would find something wrong after all of that.
