An Important note for first time growers!
    #4729367 - 09/29/05 01:19 AM (19 years, 3 months ago)

I am a first time grower, and I learned first hand that AIR EXCHANGE IS CRUCIAL! I had tape on the tops of my jars that covered the holes where I inoculated. At first I left the tape on, and I saw 0 contaminates and 0 growth after 15 days...took the tape off and viola, they started to colinize quickly. So once again, make sure your jars can breathe, no oxygen equals slow to 0 growth of mycelium. Look at the teks that use filters of dry vermiculate layer to protect against contaminates.

In one of my first grow attempts, I used silicone glue to seal the holes in my jars. Worked great! No contams! ...no myco growth either. I put them aside in a box in the basement and forgot about them. They finally contaminated after about 3-4 months. It would be a good technique for long-term storage combined with an air tight box.

Note: If glue is used, it should be removed before inoculation. The glued holes had an effect similar to canning. When they cooled they the lid depressed and would made a popping sound if opened. When I inoculated one of the jars, it sucked half the syringe in because of the vacuum.

Talk about a learning experience!

You can always just leave the lids on a little loose too.

i'm on my first grow right now
i put foil over the holes to sterilize. i took it off to inoculate and never put anything back over the holes. fast forward 12 days. half of my jars are completely colonized and half are almost done. none of them are contaminated.

don't cover the holes
as long as you have a layer of dry verm on the top you have nothing to worry about

if you've read here before you inoculated, you would have known this.
oh well, you learned first hand.

Might I add if you're crumbling your cakes to make a casing and you've decided to give the myc a day to recover, do not make the container they're recovering in air-tight. It causes a fermentation smell and in my experience opened the door to big green (not Brian Dawkins, the mold). I was told that colonized substrate couldn't get contaminated but I guess between being crumbled, weakened due to anaerobic conditions, and then heaped with unbuffered casing layer, anything can happen.

leave the foil on... the foil serves as a barrier to contams and doesn't impede air exchange one whit...

While were at it i suppose i should mention the dramatic difference in growth in terms of temperature. 3 days at 84?F i got the same amount of growth i did in 11days at 70?F, and i foil + layer of verm for my cakes too

i read you dont need extra foil(covering the holes) if u have a dry layer of verm, and my jar was colonizng slow so i took it off, i think about a day later it was full of green...

If you had done the process correctly then removing the foil would not have been a factor assuming it was a factor at all.

why exactly a day later tho, i had 2, one growing slow and one doing pretty good, so i took off one so i didnt mess up 2 jars if it didint work and sure enough one kept going, the other was full of green...they were both incubating in a garage(LONG time ago before i wised up to this hobby) so yea that could have been it but...

So polyfill will help breathe better than the tape right? It's so sticky I don't see how it can breathe much. Ppl. Say they have 3 layers,....And it can breathe??

No, take the foil off. It can impede gas exchange.

If you have a dry vermiculite layer like you are supposed to then you do not need anything extra.

If you choose to not use a dry verm barrier, than any of the typical gas exchange filters will work. SFDs, Tyvek, Polyfil, even micropore tape.

Trichoderma is white until it sporulates green. Molds like Trich fruit/sporulate when exposed to air.

If in fact you had a proper vermiculite barrier then your jars were already contaminated. When you removed the foil the gas exchange was enough to trigger the mold to sporulate.

11 years old dude. BTW I've had 5 layers on with GE being just fine. They really don't need much gas exchange unless you're dealing with massive substrate containers like bags or half gallon jars.

Right I use a syringe filter for my grain jars, scored 80 of the for under $15, had to snag them. Any ways those things are little and they allow me to use all those metal lids that came with may jars. On another note, I have been testing out using my metal lids flipped upside down and slightly loosened. Working out good!
