Straw is Straw... It will work fine, $4 is normal of bale of good wheat straw.(assuming its wheat, and its not rotten)

Just ask them if it is wheat straw. You guys in the US get stuff for dirt cheap. I would have to get barley straw in a pet shop and it costs a lot for a tiny amount.

Wheat straw would be yellow, as opposed to green..thats how you tell the difference IIRC.

Well if it were me

I might buy a 20 gallon trash can with a lab style hotplate (like a thermodyne 1900) from ebay (for about 30 bucks shipped)

Then I might seal the inside and outside seems of the can with 100% silicone so it doesnt leak

And throw it on the hot plate

with some water

and heat it to about 175

Then I might take a laundry bag from walmart and fill it with straw (chopped is best, a shreader or blender works) and soak it with hot water from the tap

Before submerging it into the trash can filled with 165-175 degree water and keeping it there at those temps and submerged for 2-3 hours.

You can also use two nested rubbermaids (one works, two works better, works even better if you put hot water in the bottom on, to use like a tub in tub incubator, or just use your incubator) and heat water on your stove to pour over the straw in the rubbermaid. The bottom one with hot water will help keep it warm, even just nested tubs will create an airspace which will help hold in the warmth. Then just pour in more hot water as needed and keep the temp there for 2-3 hours. Thats a pain to keep pouring in hot water, and what if its full and the water cools off to much? But then I think straw is a pain in the ass. The trashcan works when you decide to upgrade to horse poo though:
