DryingTube!
    #4727176 - 09/28/05 09:43 PM (11 years, 5 months ago)

Hello everyone, this is my new dry tube. It is made from a 38 oz container of Infamil Baby powder. I installed a 12v 4" computer fan on the lid, and supply power via a 12v ac adapter.

If any of you are interested in making one, please post, and I will give instructions to those who don't have much experience w/ electricity or aren't too handy!

Here is the Tube.

This is the outside, still ugly, but in v 2.0 i will be adding a switch to turn power on/off. And of course it is going to get a face lift.

Here is a quick look on the inside.

Here is the top w/ grill to prevent fingers and UFOs falling in.

Comments welcome.

Looks cool ... maybe rig a couple of wire shelves to rest your shrooms on, then put some desiccant in the bottom.

Just and idea....I haven't got to the drying stage so I'm don't have a system yet.

w/ a fan , he needs a window screen or metal screen for free flowing air. that'll give best results, maybe some type of pre-filter tho? to be pushing clean air- naaah, i doubt thats an issue

Ive made some mods to it due to the fact of poor air flow.
In regards to testing it out, i have not, my harvest isn't for another week or so, i will keep you all updated.

Here are the new pictures w/ ventilation.

This is a disposable washcloth i added to set the mushrooms in, notice the abort trying out the tube

both are not needed, when drying a few foriegn spores may land on the mushrooms
but they wont germinate because the conditions will be unfavorable, a couple of
screens to make 'shelves' would be a good idea, it'll help prevent areas with poor
circulation which could lead to rot

Woot! DIY is right up my alley!

Please share the details, I'm very interested!

I estimate I'll be set up for beginning of cultivation in 2 months, assuming I can get spores, it's a real pain in the neck here. But I digress.

I think it would be great to actually use my PC for power, and just have them drying in a cubby of my desk whilst I own n00bs on Americas Army . Please update us with how it works!

I have gone and picked up some drying supplies. Less than $4 spent..

Cardboard box, with some plain clay like kitty litter in the bottom.

2 makeshift wire mesh shelves, and two computer fans. NOTE: cut hole in lower part of the box and duct taped a coffee filter over the hole.

Screens shelves sitting inside the box.

I wanted some help with a couple of things.

1. What is the optimal air-flow direction for my box?

2. Anyone know how to tell an electrical idiot how to hook up these fans?

Should I have the air-flow PULLING the air out of the top of the box, or should I have air blowing down into the box from the top?

I think you should have to fan blowing are out of the box so that its pulled in from a hole on the otherside. Tell me how that kitty litter works for ya. Thats what I have been planing on using seeing as I can't get any other disillacants. I have been everyware three home depot, walmart, canadain tire, Paint stores, farm supplie stores even gun stores cause they use it for keeping ammo dry.

if you had a good seal around those fans (I'd use 4 for that big a box though) then you would be best off setting them to suck air out of the box. That way air is filtered through the coffee filter as it is drawn in.

Although for drying purposes, you'd be better off with them blowing air into the box onto the shrooms.

Unless you want to try making a transformer to use those with an AC plug, you'd be best off buying some case fan wire splice attachments from a well-stocked computer store. If you tell them that you need a couple more case fans on your computer, but your power supply does not have enough available plugs on it, and say you need splices for them, I'm sure they can help you from there.

I have no idea where to buy real desiccant though... I havent looked into it.

i have made a very similar drying machine out of a 5 gallon bucket with an attic fan attached to the top. i used metal fabric for shelves. 4 two inch holes in the bottom of the bucket allowed for air flow. originally i had dryrite in the bottom but that was more pain than it was worth. the baby food can is too small. go big at all times.

See, that's my problem. I know how to hook the wires up, but I don't know if the juice coming out a wall socket can go straight to those little fans (via an old plug and cord)....or does it need some sort of transformer/adaptor/converter between the socket and the fans?

I believe that most of those fans operate on 12V DC power, so you would probably need a transformer.
