ID on possible Sylvatica
    #4726875 - 09/28/05 08:43 PM (11 years, 2 months ago)

Hey guys ontario got the last bit of rita earlier this week and i got out and checked in a little park  near a forest yesterday for mushrooms and found a whole lot of mushrooms growing off of woodchips.  We picked all the ones that looked like psilocybes.  Heres the description:

Gills:  Light grey/purplish/beigish.  Not attached, not crowded but not sparse

Stem: White and somewhat weak.  The caps would allways fall off the    stem; quite fragile

Cap: Chesnut brown when wet, light beige when dry.  Outer skin somewhat transparent so that many lines run down from the top to the side.

Sporeprint:  Jet black! what i expected purple :frown:

Habitat: clustered on woodchips in southern ontario.  undesturbed habitat.

I forgot to bring my camera so all i could use was my phone, which is poor quality and i dont have a cable so i can't upload them to this forum  .  I took some when i got home but they're terrible, my camera flash allways takes the color out.  I will try to get some of the habitat pictures on here as soon as i figure out my phone.

Oh yeah and some of the mushrooms had a faint dull nipple, nothing sharp like liberty caps but just a little hump on top.

Thanks guys!

I found a mushroom very similar, or the same, to the one your describing, same spore print too, no idea what it is though.

Can anyone I.D. this?

well i was reading through my book by stamets, and as far as deadly look alikes go, they all have rusty-brown spore prints, and this is definately not rusty brown.  The only mushroom genus i know of jet black sporeprint is panaeolus, and this definately is not panaeolus.  im gonna search fungus fun for something like that, but first i am gonna try to get my poor-quality pictures off of my phone and onto this post.  Also, i forgot to check if i could peel the gills away from the outer skin/pellicle before i dried them, but i might go back tommorow or on the weekend [it rained again ] and collect some more.

Allrighty me and my buddy went back and took some pictures!
Here they are!

Lol like the little ones under the leaf

above: small nipple/lump?

Thats all for now I am up on my bandwidth limit for today. I will have more of those tommorow.

There were at least 4 other kinds of interesting mushrooms out in this same place (not active). If anyone can eyeball this and tell us what it is that would be neat.

grew off the woodchips. There were lots of them about. The cap skin is completely translucent, and the gills are extreemly shallow, and sometimes the cap was completely and perfectly level/flat.

PS. Photography brought to you in part by my buddy, Blue_meanie

the last mushroom is a coprinus. there doesnt appear to be any bruising of any sort. your suspected psilocybes look alot like psathyrella... possibly gracilis.

I found a shitload of the ones in your first picture in your second post. Also on woodchips. Are they active?

Ontario here as well.
