shredded manure vs fresher more whole manure
    #4726810 - 09/28/05 06:32 PM (18 years, 5 months ago)

i found a place for horse shit. it offers shredded manure and also a fresher air dried manure that is more whole but that i will obviously break apart.

i might like to get both as each is in less supply than id like. What are the drawbacks of the less fresh, possibly too finely shredded manure, if any?

I would get the shredded....fresh is bad you want aged.

the shredded manure is going to be ready to soak and then pastuerize from the sounds of it. the fresher whole poo may still need to be aged a bit, don't know haven't seen or smelt of it.
the finely shredded poo is going to be good, does it have a nice even consistency? if so it will colonize very nicely.
best of luck

Why would you tell him "not shredded" for a mushroom substrate? Broken up, dried poo is what you want.

definitely the wrong thing to do you goofy. the finely shredded stuff is what we want for the consistency of our poo. i don't think i would have emailed the dude and told him anything about mushroom substrates either, think.

i found out its the same stuff only one is shredded. I know i want it broken up finely. i just thought there was a difference prior to shredding. Ill prob be breaking up the unshredded to the same consistency anyways.

breaking it up by hand is going to hard to reach the consistency of shredded poo, believe me when i say. i just got a new shredder and it kicks ass compared to breaking it up by hand. i would go with the shredded if i were you, much nicer stuff and the myc colonizes it very fast.

Why would you tell the guy that? His shreaded horse manure is just as good as TN Studs (which comes shreaded too BTW) or any other manure, broken up by hand or shreader doesnt matter. I absolutly love the shreaded stuff. Neither really matters for the mushrooms sake but you can easily spend 6 hours breaking up a large batch of poo...besides that, the clumps will still be fresher, and still have moisture in them. If you buy the shreaded stuff its SO much fluffier, and drier, so you get more poo out of it in the end for less work.
