Green Mold? Pics please help..
    #4725478 - 09/28/05 03:21 PM (11 years, 5 months ago)

So I've got my PF Cakes fruiting right now - they colonized at different times so they are at different stages of fruiting. I just harvested the first cake and dunked it for 12 hours. When I pulled out the cake it had blue on it (expected as  brusing of the mycelium) but there was also a bacterialesque smell. I put the cake back in the fruitng chamber then about a half hour later decided I should pull it out and post here before risking contaming my other cakes. Check out the green/blue dots on the cakes - also there was a primordia that was green and smooshed when I pulled it off, the rest of the primordia on the cake appear normal.

Please help fast ~ If this cake is o.k. then I want to get it back into fruiting S.T.A.T. although I do think it is contaminated I'm looking for a second opinion as this is my first grow.. :mushroom2: :mushroom2: :mushroom2: :mushroom2:

sorry first pic messed up for some reason..

see the green dots on the top pic? the cake does look good but it is just that it smelled a little sour after the dunk and thats what really has me worried. I just pulled my second dunked cake out tonight and it had a similar smell but no dots - maybe this is just normal and I'm not used to the smell?

One consideration is that I dunked in containers that weren't real clean (i just rinsed them out before dunking) and i used tap water ~ maybe the next ones i should scrub the containers and used distilled water?

Tap water is fine for dunking. The cakes look ok. Perhaps just a bit of bruising, but that isn't trich. You should also rinse the cakes off under running water before, and again after dunking. That will help to wash off any bacteria that is growing on it.

Ok - is it ok to put this stinky cake in the same fruiting chamber as my other cakes? I'm concerned because after this cake is in the fruiting chamber the whole thing takes on a slightly bacterial smell - maybe rinsing the cake will fix this I will try and let you all know..

No. If it stinks, isolate it. Get a second chamber or put it outside, weather permitting.

rinsed them and put into the fruting chamber - no smell now must have fought off the bateria! thanks for the help ~ without it I would've tossed the cakes - oh no!
