hey does anyone out there know whether mushrooms kill brain cells? I really have no basis for thinking this however my reckless speculation is: no they don't. That is no more than breathing does. Anyone have any thoughts? Thanks all. BTW the people on this message board are about the coolist people in the world, obviously.

For waht its worth, the crap they feed to you in schools about having 2000 brain cells that dont regenerate is BS. a) You have like 2 million b) They do regenerate, just slowly And even with that, I dont think pot kills brain cells. Just the harder stuff, which ones exactly I'm not sure.

Razer, 2 million doesn't sound like too many either im sure it has to be way more than that if you think about how small a cell is. Isn't all your brain matter made up of cell's? Are these not brain cells? I find it amusing that schools would tell kids that there is only 2,000 brain cells I wouldn't believe them. Are there any Biologist's in here that could let us know the real deal on how many brain cells an adult would have? Im sure theres some people with Biology degrees that post/lurk on this site.

there are over 50,000,000,000 (billion) cells that make up the last part of an average human thumb.

Not sure about that but I can tell you a little about seratonin. Lack of seratonin leads to depression, and guess what shrooms "attack" seratonin hence the depressed feeling the next few days after digestion and absorption. But not to worry because these seratonin are fairly fast to recover and If I'm not mistaken I think prozack increases seratonin count but I may just be full of shit. So give it a try for yourself if your looking to avoid depression. peace

Actually, they don't regenerate at all, well at least not indefinately. You are born with a certain number of "precursor" cells which can develop into brain and nerve cells. Some developearly, and form the nervous system, some lie dormant until needed, but if you've already used up all of your precursors....there's nothing you can do to bring em back.

Pot does not kill brain cells, for lack of a better word it kinda stuns them, makes them retarded for a little while. After a while they return to normal Alcohol kills brain cells one of the only drugs that i know off, that kills brains cells in significant amounts.. besides shitty inhalants such as glue and markers.. and paint

They say that if you smoke weed for 20 years every day its doesnt kill as much brain cells as huffing paint (or some other stupid shit) everyday for a week. Psilocybin doesnt attack seratonin. The chemical merely connects with seratonin. Thats how it gets into your pineal gland. And I dont really feel depressed afterwords.. I feel more positive towards the world (Until i step outside and realize what a shit hole it is)
-------------------- They chopped her goddam head off right there in the parking lot. Then they cut all kinds of holes in her head and sucked the blood out. I think they were after the pineal gland.

woah. over 150 people have read this post and no one has given a good answer. i dont know about brain cells (ill check my psycho-bio textbook thats been my new potty companion when i get home) but seratonin is *not* "attacked" or even involved with a mushroom trip. psilocybin and psilocin attach to seratonin *receptors* -- and that too has nothing to do with the pineal gland. you are thinking of mdma (seratonin levels) and dmt (endogenous chemical in pineal gland). read: "Trips : How Hallucinogens Work in Your Brain" http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1888363347/qid%3D1007016250/ref%3Dsr%5F11%5F0%5F1/102-1285496-5008950 and lsd doesnt cause bubbles on your spine either. sigh.. hey why is this in cult anyway?!?

All substances that act on the brain are typically classed as 'neurotoxins' and ill think you'll find that even caffiene and nicotine effect brain cells and neuro-chemistry... Lower levels of Seratonin may not necessarily cause depressive states... Lastly, every five years, every cell in the human body dies and is replaced, so every five years, in many ways you are a new person - and yes, i saw this on a crappy tv show, and it has fuck all to do with the topic :-)

Every chemical you put in your brain that isn't there natively causes a rection in some way...cause it's not supposed to be there. Some reactions are beneficial, neutral, bad, worse, and some are downright fucking evil. The fact that we hallucinate on mushrooms is because of evolution. The mushrooms developed these chemicals over countless generations to ward off predators...cause the little fuckers can't get up and run around. This would seem to indicate that there is at least some organic damage done, albeit absolutely miniscule. Fortunately for us, these chemicals are REALLY fun and not so bad for the body. Other plants have done the same thing, deadly nightshade for example pruduces digitalis and is fatal (although used for heart problems in microdoses). A little perspective on the whole chemical reaction thing...caffiene, nicotine, yes...even acetominophin are all magnitudes more damaging than muchrooms...to say nothing of alcohol, crank, and coke. So eat up and don't sweat it.

In reply to the supposed theory of evolution of our little friends; The Mckenna Brothers proposed that shrooms may have originated in outer space (since spores can live in a vacum) and that they are trying to help US evolve. Whatever they are doing to my brain, I like it. In regards to losing brain cells; What is all this based on? It seems like a comparative analysis to what this particular culture deems "good" or "appropriate" as far as what is important. I think whatever is happening to our brains is antithical to the american cultural normes and therefore (comparativly) appears to cause lapses of memory (in regards to pot). I think it just makes us look/percieve things in a different way. Case in point; I worked for a place that had teens who were in trouble with the law. Many of them were artists. They used their right brains as opposed to using their left brains which is what is rewarded in this culture. Ever heard that 100 years ago there were as many left handed people as there were right handed people? Western/American culture rewards analytical thinking hence the emphasis on MONEY and it's aquisition. Pot does not produce real go getters as a whole nor does mushrooms allow people to buy into the bullshit that the mass media is fooling most people with. My 2 cents.

Wow, I can't believe the can of worms I opened by posting. I am really happy to see all the replies and all or your opinions basically confirm my thoughts. Shrooms are not anymore detrimental to your brain than simply breathing the polutants in our atmosphere. Thanks for all the great replies. Thanks all. Have fun in life. The alternative is just down right depressing.

mckenna.. yes, dear terance has tought me many things while still in this form of conscousness... And as far as mushrooms killing brain cells.. no. Pot? no.. sorry, no kilin brain cells for her either. i forget exactly what happens, but i think it does somethin like temporarilly raise the chemical in yur brain that processes a certain type of thinking.. so u think in that certain matter and think less in the other forms of thinking.. then the pot wears off and yur normal again, no damage done.. except for yur lungs and heart and all that. good thing i grow my own and only take oral doses.
