My mom was a chef.
She went to cooking school and all that shit.
So yeah normally the food is pretty good.

My mom isn't a terrible cook, but she's not that great (sorry mom).
She's WAY healthy and everything that she cooks is massively good for you. Everything, would it kill you to use just a tiny dab of butter, mom? I guess that's what you get when your mom works in a cholesterol research lab.
She makes a lot of pasta with a gazillion vegetables and whatnot. Oh, one thing she makes that really simple but suprisingly good: fresh tomatoes cut into slices all laid out on a really big plate, mixed in with sliced up bits of boccacinni cheese and chopped, fresh basil from the garden and doused with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Delicious. Boccacinni, by the way, is a kind of cheese that I think is somewhat related to mozarella, but it's like, way milder and has more moisture in it. When you buy it, it usually comes in little balls floating in water. It doesn't have a lot of flavor but it absorbs tastes nicely and has an amazing texture.
My dad, on the other hand, makes some really kick ass foods, he just doesn't usually cook.
He makes the most amazing tourtiere I've ever tasted in my entire life. Now, I don't know if americans know what tourtiere is, but it's a kind of meat pie that quebeckers make. It's got regular pie crust (not like that mashed potatoey shit on shepard's pie), and it's usually a mix of pork and beef. It generally has a little bit of cinnamon and cloves in it, giving it kind of a unique taste, and some barley and maybe chopped up carrots and peas and whatnot.
The tourtiere my dad makes is amazing. Ground pork, ground beef, ground lamb, chopped bacon, barley, carrots, peas, intense thick lardy pie crust... oh man. It's like nothing else, and it's DENSE. I swear one little slice weighs like 50 lbs.
One time I got really stoned went out to a buffet for dinner with some friends, and naturally, gorged myself. Then I came home a few hours later, and my dad had made a HUGE tourtiere, this was the first time he'd made it actually. I was a little hungry, still being stoned, and so I cut myself a decent sized honk of meat pie, and wolfed it down. My gut felt like it was going to explode, I was full for days afterwards. Plus the pie lasted for a long time. I ate a lot of it, but it was so dense that it took like a week to make it through it all.
I've got to pressure my dad into making more of that, or at least showing me how. I should bring a big one to the next shroomery gathering or something.
My dad makes a few other really good things. Like perogies from scratch. Those are like a whole day's work but man are they worth it. It's kind of a tradition to make those for dinner on Christmas eve in our house.
MAN are they good.
He also makes pretty decent bread, buns, and apple pies. Oh, and tomato soup from scratch that's really tasty and cheesy. He's a pretty good cook when he actually cooks.

Both my mom and dad can cook pretty well. But my dad makes a mean curry.

My mother isn't a good cook, but she makes excellent pumpkin pie.
My dad used to make excellent pizza, but he hasn't cooked for me in ten years.
I'm a lot better cook than they are, but my meals tend to be spicy and/or exotic.

my mom doesnt use butter or salt and always trys to be way to health consious. the result is that most of the food is bland and crappy. There's a few things that she cooks that are abosuletly delicious though.
i assimilated her good recipes into my cook book and never looked back.

My mums cooking is TERRIBLE, she is unadventurous and burns EVERYTHING!
She's been trying to make jellies and jams for years and it always ends up as toffee. I made my first jelly the other day just for the hell of it (wild crabapple and sloe) and it turned out perfect!
I suppose you've either got the knack or you haven't
