I usually do a little of both, But i've heard rumors that the most psilocyban collects where the stem meets the cap. But if someone could verify this for me I would love to know.

They both seem the same, unless the caps are convex ond open to the point of spliting...then the caps seem weak..

closed caps are potent. I had a 1/4lb one time and all the "shake" at the bottom of the bag gave me one of my best trips ever!

It probably got started because the caps are usually a lot bigger than the stems, so people would say eat the caps because they will fuck you up more. Plus the caps look all crazy and potent, while stems are just plain stems.....those poor little underestimated stems...

i heard the caps are better cuz thats where the spores are and that the poison in the mushroom(the part that make you fucked up) comes from the spores.,

first of all, i have experience growing different mushrooms, have read a lot of mycological information, and especially pertaining to the mushrooms in question. The caps, since they will produce the spores, are NOT potent, especially if they are opening, like a few other comments noted. It is not true that spores contain any "poison", psilocybin, or ANYTHING that will cause an effect. this is why spores are legal - contain no illegal substances. In fact, most people not into the scientific aspects of these might think that the bigger mushrooms are better, but this is actually not the case at all. As they mature (grow larger, and cap opens - changing from conical to umbrella-like), their potency has been proven to decrease. My theory for this is that as the cap is devoted to spreading the spores (reproducing), there is no room in it for the amount of psilocybin that the stems or premature cap contains. SO, the moral is, big open caps are weak, caps in general are probably somewhat weaker, and that the smaller and more immature looking the things are, the more potent (watch out for what you get - sometimes people will sell large mature ones since they look cool, and weigh a lot, and take less work to grow, but they are WEAKER, and you will be getting less for the amount. Quick clarification question:
The mushrooms get less potent by weight as the caps grow larger, but considering you have more mushroom there, wouldn't the net amount of psilocybin be the same? Where does the psilocybin go if not?

So... if you were to grow mushrooms, you should pick them (a day?) BEFORE the veil starts to break away from the cap?

I have posted in response to folks asking if the bigger shrooms are better, or the tiny ones more potent.
I always get blasted for saying that a pre-veiled shroom is more potent than a post veil breaking.
I can only speak from expereince.
I know when I used to BUY shrooms, they were always huge, opened veiled shrooms. I had to consume about 4 grms + to even get a decent trip. Most times it was just a sick feeling, a few visuals, and a lot of shivers.
Now, when I get my shrooms, they are smaller, pre veil, and very dark blue. (The ones I bought were always white/tan) These smaller shrooms are super strong, (PF or EQ strain) great colourful visuals, enhanced music appreciation, almost no shivers, and 2.5 grms will get you pretty lifted.
So, I am led to believe pre veil, good.
Open veil, big, but less potent.
But, does it really matter. As long as you get the experience you're looking for, do what works. Personally, I hate the taste of shrooms, and the less I have to injest the happier I am.
