Cracked cake

Foaf has one 1/2 pint left in the incubation chamber. His chamber is filled about 1 inch or so with water with a fish tank heater heating the water to 85.degrees.The jars just sit in the warm water lids above the water of course . For whatever reason the cake was about 50% colonized then it cracked about a good quarter inch from top to bottom. Is this because the cakes dried out ? Maybey its the style of incubator he's using , any idea's or advise would be great .

Can't say for sure, but sometimes a bacterial contamination can appear like that. Is it stinky?
