Intellectual Property, Domain Services, and Host Services.
    #4722474 - 09/27/05 09:14 PM (18 years, 6 months ago)

Are there any conflicts our there with your intellectual property and the domain and page hosting services you use. For instance are there any providers of these services that in their agreements somehow take a certain claim to your intellectual property (text and media). If it happens is it common?

I ask this because I'm trying to get a web site togeather for my band and I'm kind of paranoid about intellectual property. Mostly because I don't completely understand all the legal ins and outs of it.

I know that it's probably pretty common for people to ask about the best providers for web space and domain registration, but with respect to intellectual property (if any concern is necissary) what would you guys recommend as trustable and affordable companies.

I'm especially concerned about domain name registration, cause I don't want to get myself trapt in one company and not be able to transfer if need be. For instance I'm kind of concerned about them owning the domain name and me just using it at a price if that makes any sense.

Thanks greatly.

While I don't know how common it is, it is done by some companies.

AOL, earlier this year, changed the license agreement for their AOL Instant Messanger service. The change they made gave them FULL rights to ANYTHING put on the AIM network - so everything you write or send to your friends through AIM is henceforth the legal property of AOL/TimeWarner

Technicly it wouldn't hold up in court because legally you cannot sign away your rights, but they could give you some trouble over it.

What rights are you talking about here?

You can certainly sign away your rights to intellectual property.

A good friend of mine hosts for me (and others), you could try him if you'd like. I know he's not going to try and scam you or anything, and he's prettty easy-going as far as webadmins go

I get 1GB disk space and 1GB transfer per month for $5 a month. He also gives out 50GB space/transfer for $20 a month, I think.

Send him an email and see what he can offer: webmaster@livestream.ca

What about domain names? I guess I'm really more worried about them, not because of my intellectual property of text and media, but concidering my domain name my propoerty, if that makes any sense. I vaguely remember a while back hearing of some people having a rough time dealing with domain registration companies. Any suggestions?

Hmm. Well I registered my domain (trendal.org) through www.RegisterFly.com and I've not had any problems with them (other than the occaisional advertising sent to my email account).

To be honest, I haven't heard about any one having any problems with domain registration companies. I used to hear a lot about people having trouble with other people registering domain names before them - then "offering" to sell the domain name for a rediculous price. Say someone registered hooty.com and then emailed you saying "hey! I'll sell you hooty.com for $1000! Great price!" :smirk:

sent you a PM. Namecheap has worked well for me...i think as long as you stick to the major players, you will be fine. I probably wouldnt use Yahoo, or other sites that try to include it in an all-exclusive package type deal, or sites that have unbelievably cheap registration, because its usually them who buy the domain, and simply let you use it until its worth money, then try to sell it to you ;]
