The Elusive Mushroom Has Escaped Me : However, Have I Discovered It's Pre-form?
    #4721535 - 09/27/05 08:15 PM (11 years, 7 months ago)

Just got back from a browsing of a nearby cow pasture.

The point of entry I had to choose was on the far side of where the cows normally graze. The farmer who runs the field hasn't moved the cow to graze where I had entered the field at in awhile.

The cow dung was dry, and cracked so I knew it had been there for awhile. I didn't find any mushrooms in the area I looked in however on a few of the cow patties, there was a white fuzzy layer of it. I immediately thought it was mycelium but I am not sure.

What do you guys think?

I would think the myc would be most visible on a dry patty flipped over not growing on top. What was the question again

Is the white fuzzy layer over the dried cow patty mycelium?

Do I need to start flipping cow patties over? Because I never did to that when I went to the cow field yesterday. I just looked on top.

Do I need to start flipping cow patties over?

mycelium is more often found visibly growing underneath and inside of the cow pattie.
less often will you find the mycelium growing on top of the pattie.

it is possible tho.

Will I find actual mushrooms growing under a cow pattie rather than on top? Should I be checking?

Also, weilii.com says that with the recent rain, today (Wednesday), would be a good day to go hunt. Agree?

You can sometimes find baby Psilocybe cubensis mushrooms growing underneath the cow pie.
They grow from underneath the pie and then as they mature reach up and above towards the sunlight.

Tearing the patties up from the ground to check for mycelium typically disrupts the future growth of the shrooms, so you don't really want to do this with too many of them.

So to answer your question, the mushrooms mainly grow on top of the patties, this is what you look for in the fields. But occassionally (like when you are not finding any shrooms growing) you can flip a couple patties over to check as an indicator if the mycelium underneath the patties is flourishing or not.

And if you do see this mycelium growing, without any fruits or mushrooms you will have a hard time knowing which species of mushroom mycelium it is.

Flipping patties is usually just a practice used as an indicator to see if the patties are thriving with any mycelium.
And on occassion you will see some baby mushrooms fruiting underneath the pattie.

Okay cool, this makes alot more sense now.

Does it matter if the patties are old, or do I have a better chance of finding them if the patties are a little more on the fresh-side?

I live in Maryland, and this reminds me of my first ever mushroom hunt. At the time I was uneducated and thought that P. cubensis shrooms would grow in cow dung, so I went searching in a field. Much to my surprise, I actually found some little white dots in the patties that resembled cakes. I came back in the next and some were gone. I also found a patty that was laying in tall grass, away from the sun and actually had mushrooms growing out of it! I don't know if it's a different type of mushroom or it is p. cubensis, but I thought that p. cubensis didn't grow in Maryland... who knows! If anyone has any thoughts on this, let me know please!

edit: this was in late june/early july (summer)
