Casing Question

Ok this is my first time doin casing. I've read all of the ways to do casing but I still have a few questions. I know you need to use a 50/50 mix but for right now I got some jiffy mix which will do the job but after I'm out of that I'm going to make my 50/50 casing by hand. The main question I have is how do you go about to sterilize the 50/50 casing mix? what I was thinking was to boil water and then add that water in to the mix so that way the heat of the water will kill all containments. Also I've read to crumble the mycelium and also to cut it in to like cumbers and fill in the gaps. Which way in your opinion works best. Also are you suppose to put the casing layer, mycelium then wait till you see some pin-heads then add another layer of mix or just do it all at once. Also cuz I've done cakes before and always cold shocked them. should I cold shock the cakes again before I do the casing or no.

5 minutes in the microwave, stir, 5 minutes more. That's how I sterilize mine. Make sure you let it cool.

You can go a layer of verm. on the bottom, substrate, then casing layer. Place back into incubator, for up to 3 days, or just fruit immediately. Up to you. Some peeps fruit right after casing.

Don't really need a cold shock for cubes, maybe some of the tropical strains, but not for most. 10 degree temp drop should induce pinning.

I wouldn't worry too much about sterility of your casing layer. Personally I never sterilize my casing layer and have yet to have a problem with my casings, however sterilizing is obviously a safe step to take.
