Using milk crates to grow. Idea. Please comment.
    #4719723 - 09/27/05 02:21 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

I have a number of milk crates. I'm considering lining them with black trash bags and then filling with horsepoo and spawning with ecuadorian strain. Then closnig the bag (tying it off) until the hpoo is spawned. Once that is complete, what would your opinions be? At that point, how should I allow them to fruit? I can open the bags up but the crates will need some sort of cover. What would you guys do at this step?

Sounds like it will work. Just get some tubing and fill it with polyfil, then tie the bag around that. Once spawned though, a top would have to be put on so light can come in.
One concern of mine is that you can't see into the bag. You will have no idea if they are colonizing unless you open it up, which could expose it to contams. Maybe some sort of clear plastic would be better?

dosnt someone do the same thing with a box onetime. IT was like a box grow. They put a bag in the box and when it was time to fruit they just opened the box for a a couple hours every day then misted and closed again each day. If memory serves it worked perfectly.

Just use the crate as if it were a laundry basket. Pasturize your horse manure and then load the crate with a couple inches of manure @ field capacity, then a layer of spawn. So on and so on until it's full. Mist the crate daily to obtain the proper moisture. There's no need for plastic and the contamination rate is nodda if the manure and spawn is done correctly......

Absolutely, and also, something to note is that you have at least five sides exposed to light for extra fruiting surface.

I had the same idea except I planned to line the crates with a black garbage bag first and then a clear one.  close both with a filter and then after colonization open the outside black bag leaving the clear bag to allow light.

how exactly is he an idiot? he has everything right except he doesnt need to tie the bag. other than that this should work fine. OP if you plan on fruiting it outdoors you would need a mini-greenhouse. i did see a nice oyster grow where he wrapped his straw basket with seran wrap, leaving gaps for the mushrooms to poke thru. indoors you will need a big fc, like this one maybe , i had a humidifier and perlite for the rh, and plenty of holes for fae.

Ah, that explains it.  Typical know-it-all noob.  We get a few thousand just like you register here every year.  They try a few grows, fail miserably and then after a few months or one bad trip, go back to sniffing glue, never to be seen again.

We have a basic pf tek that's idiot proof enough for noobs to get fucked up with their friends.

Mycologists on the other hand grow for the love of growing.  They want to experiment with various species, substrates, and fruiting environments. They'll move on to isolate strains, attempt hybridization, and in general treat cultivation as an artform, rather than a chore that must be performed as a means to an end.  They'll work twice as hard for a ten percent gain, just for the love of perfection.  These are the ones who will isolate strains, not the dumb fucks who treat mushrooms as a drug, or even worse, a pathogen, as if mushrooms cause disease.
