First Innoculations

Well, my substrate jars are all coming right along. 2 of them are 3/4 full colonized in the substrate jars. How much longer will it normally take before i can birth the cakes? It's been 10 days now. Just curious what happens if you birth a cake too early or not 100% colonized. Not that I will, just trying to learn.

Also, found some of those Kern 1/2 wide mouth (short/wide) jars today at a local grocery store. Suprised the hell out of me cause I've had a hard time tracking them down around here.

Got the spores from sporeworks still on the way. I've heard a lot of people saying they usually take approx. 5 business days to deliver? Should be thursday. cool! :)

And, talked to a friend today who wants to do some cabenzeies w/ me, so should be fun. Really hoping these cambo's turn out.

Wow, thats pretty fast, the rule is after they look fully colonized give them a few more days...At that rate 5 more days and you can birth..

Would you recommend me trying to take one jar and trying to make a casing from it? Again, this is my first try, but i do have 3 of them about ready.
Dang, i'm getting excited. Not to exciting at first watching white fuzzy stuff growing. :)

I would recommend casing all of them with straight verm in seperate containers...Don't put all your eggs in one basket and keep it simple, you don't need an aquariums and all these humidity controllers...I've seen elaborate setups and casing mixes ruin a simple procedure...Use a rubbermaid container case with straight verm use the neglect tek and you will have nice sized mushrooms with minimul effort...Pick at pre-vail and dry with no heat and a fan.........

I was thinking of trying to case one of the jars, and grow the other two just from the substrate cake. Just dry verm. layer, then crumble the white substrate, then 1/2" of dry verm. on top correct.?

Yes, damp verm or dry verm with a liie misting, also a bottom layer isn't need if your container is not transparent.............

when you put a bottom layer of perlite do you wet it? how exactly does that work? is it better than just putting some 50/50+ for a top and bottom layer? is it necissary for the 50/50+ for both layers or just top? thanks

Also can someone confirm a top layer of dry verm.? I've heard that this can really help to keep contams out of the wet verm beneath. Same idea as when making the jars.

Yes a vermiculite layer does keep contams out , you need to read the old posts they are tried and true................................................................................................................................................

thanks egoless for confirming this. I've heard a lot of conflicting opinions here about it.

sounds like the way to go w/ a simple casing is:
layer of wet verm (bottom)
crumbled substrate
layer of wet verm
small layer of dry verm

and the wet verm should only be just damp, not soaking.
