car radar screen
    #4718381 - 09/27/05 03:22 AM (11 years, 2 months ago)

Okay, now, this is a little daydream of mine. I was wondering, if there was a way to connect a gps and a radar detector and diplay it on a monitor as a radar screen. Or something similar. Basically, I want a screen that shows a difference in civilian and govmnt cars such as police, ambulances, etc. Is this possible? I just think it'd be cool to have a radar in the car.

Possible? Probably. Realistic? No.

How would you distinguish betwee a car on the road, and a car in a parking lot? Or a tree? Or a building?

If you had an incredibly powerful and sensitive detector you might be able to get some idea as to the proximity of the radar-generating car to yours, but to pinpoint the location, you'd need a detector capable of interpreting the direction of the signal. Most only react to the presence of a signal.

valentine1's detector interprets behind and ahead at least. But couldnt you just add a wall of sensors in a 360 degree circle.

Maybe. Even still, all that'd get you would be a general range (between slightly northwest and north) and a general distance (a few miles to a few feet) where a car with radar might be. If that's all you're looking for, then yes, you COULD do that- provided you or someone else were able to send that information through some kind of processing system to the GPS program, which would have to be coded to display that info on the map. Not impossible, I just don't think it's currently implemented anywhere.

It would be neat though.

Yeah, hopefully some more people will read this and give their input. Cause this is a nice idea, I'm just too technologically retarded to build it all on my own.

How could you ever differentiate between the civilian and gov't vehicles?

You might be able to tell a cop car when it was actively using the radar gun, but that's it as far as I can see.

I'd convert the signal to audio and treat it like sonar rather than radar.

I wonder what a radar gun sounds like.
