All my jars were contaminated!
    #4717919 - 09/27/05 01:30 AM (11 years, 2 months ago)

Well, I just disposed of my last cake. I inoculated about 2 weeks ago, and had mycelium growth for about a week, but over the last few days, my jars have all become contaminated. I was wondering if this could have been cause from a contaminated syringes. I made my own syringes from a spore print, so I'm willing to accept the possibility that I was not cautious enough in maintaining sterility during the process, but it makes me wonder that the contaminants didn't appear until well after the mycelium. It seems odd to me that the molds (or whatever ended up ruining each cake) took so much longer to appear, when they grow so much faster. Any thoughts?

How where the jars prepared?

Bacteria contams can come from using too much water. Bad syringes can cause them too. If the syringes are to blame the contam spots they started growing on should be close to the inoculation points. Bad sterilization contams should come at random and with cakes it seams you can still get bacteria fairly often just boiling the cakes and not pressure cooking.

Well, I followed the growing guide from erowid.org. The process used brown rice flour and vermiculite, boiled for sterility for an hour (I suppose I might have boiled them a little longer to be sure). The contamination points were most certainly near the inoculation points, but I figured it was possible that airborne contaminants were somehow getting through the inoculation holes. I did use the dry layer of vermiculite, however, but I wasn't sure if contaminants were getting through or not. This was my very first attempt, so help is greatly appreciated.

it really matters as to how much water was added, what was the tempature during colonization, did the tempature during colonization changed every so often, or it could have just been a bad syringe.

hey its happened to me on my first try (12 jars) but dont give up.
try using the growing guide from the shroomery man, no where else

Yeah, actually, I did notice some condensation where the first couple of jars had their contamination. And, I had been using a small refrigerator to keep the jars on top of to raise the temperature a bit, but I did recently unplug it as I was rearranging some other equipment. And it was pretty much right after it had been unplugged that most of the contamination occurred, but I guess I didn't realize it could have such a negative effect.
