First Colonization
    #4717146 - 09/26/05 11:34 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

I am doing my first ever PF Cakes. Started them last Wednesday. Finally today they show significant signs of colonization. Checked a couple other times and didn't see anything and all of a sudden there they are. Just a bit of bad news... One of the 5 jars has a dark spot in it. Hopefully it isn't contaminated.
One question... at what point are they most likely to show contamination? All the way till birthing?

can you post a pic of the suspect contam? Contams can happen all the way till the birth point, they can also happen while fruiting. Check out the contam forum's FAQ. http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/23418

before I go check it again... how much light can they be exposed to before they have problems? I am trying not to check them to often.

I think it might just be some oddly colored vermiculite. It is no where near an inoculation point, so I am keeping my fingers crossed.
I wish I could get a pict to you but I don't have a camera available to me right now.

Don't worry about having the light hit them while checking. The only thing you need to worry about is getting contams in them by handling them too much. I know it's hard to resist so I would suggest spraying your hands with alcohol (preferably 95% ethanol, if you can find it, usually chemical supply stores, or school :P) then you can handle them without worrying, as much. You can also take a couple of coffee filters and put them over the top with a rubber band around them (http://www.shroomery.org/images/26004/558695380-0270.jpg). How long since you inoculated them?

right on, it took almost 3 weeks for my 1st BRF cakes (1/2 pint) to get 100% colonized. Good luck man, post a pic if you get a camera.

Well, I started growing after a trip to amsterdam.  I didn't really know where to find them around here, well, except some cow fields but I wanted good shrooms.  Now i'm on a quest to grow better shrooms than the ADam folks now.  ... I'm actually going back in a few weeks.  What strain are you growing?
