will mexicana fruit off a cake? I did some experimenting with different things and have a colonized 1/2 pint jar left of rye grass seed left. So will it fruit with out a casing?
At this point im not interested in growing stones.

so would that mean if a cake was pinning that it is not p. mexicana?
I went ahead and tried it anyway and it is starting to pin.
I think there may have been a mix up with the syringe.
As you can probably tell im new to growing so cant tell the diference in species.

Can you get pictures? Is the cake only rye grass seed? Its possible, but highly unlikly. A picture would tell us much better though.

i cant get pictures at the moment, will borrow a camera soon and post pics. The cake is 100% rye grass seed.
The stem of the biggest one is about 1/2 inch wide and still growing. i thought mexicana were really small shrooms?
Thanks for the help so far.

bump
ANyone know the average width of a p. mexicana stem. If mine are getting 3/4 - 1 inch wide would that rule out the chance of it been p. mexicana?

i'd say a inch inch thick stem on a mexA is virtually unheard of. still, a picture is needed to be certain.

You may be talking about a Mexi Cube, rather than mexicana. Where did you get the spores from?

The spores came from a trade. Im staring to think that they may have confused mexi cube for mexicana but they were traded as P. mexicana.
Ill get pic ASAP.

No mexicana stems wouldnt be an inch in diameter..youd be doing good if your caps are an inch in diameter. These are Tampanensis, similar species, look different but this gives you an idea:
Pan cyans also look more like Mexicana then cubensis (as far as size):
Cubensis would look like this:
If yours look more like the first two, then you have mexicana growing (very very unlikly from the sounds of it), if they look like the cubies, then you have a cubie growing there. Its possible the person got mixed up, or the print is contaminated with cubensis. I have before spawned colonized pan cyan spawn, which I KNOW was pan cyan from the look of it, then when it fruited, I only got a few cubies..and I've had cubies sprout next to pan cyans on the same casing..the cubensis takes over. I was fruiting in a big closet with lots of cubie spores around so thats probably how it took over..stuff like that happens. So do mixups, and people not knowing what they have.
