Dalai Lama Tells U.S. Crowd War Outdated

By ROSA CIRIANNI

Monday, September 26, 2005; 11:05 AM

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- The Dalai Lama told 36,000 people at Rutgers Stadium that the concept of war was outdated and young people have a responsibility to make this century one of peace.

"This whole planet is just us," the 70-year-old exiled monk said Sunday. "Therefore, destruction of another area essentially is destruction of yourself."

The Dalai Lama, center, Noble Prize-winning monk and Tibetan leader in exhile, is joined by Maura Moynihan, left, daughter of the late Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan, as he examines the key to New York after it was presented to him by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, right, at a ceremony at the future site of the Moynihan Train Station, Sunday, Sept. 25, 2005. Tibet's spiritual leader also urged the audience to develop a wider world perspective, not just focus on "America, America, America."

"His quiet mind is the kind of serenity New Jersey, home of strip malls, could use," Arielle Gomberg said.

The speech was the largest nonathletic event in Rutgers history, topping visits by former President Clinton and former U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno.

A row of monks, wearing traditional gold and maroon, sat near the stage on blankets, pillows or mats spread across the 10- and 20-yard lines on the football field.

The Dalai Lama, who won the 1989 Nobel peace prize, accepted an honorary degree from Rutgers President Richard McCormick. He said it was an honor to receive it without having to work hard and study.

In his lecture, "Peace, War and Reconciliation," the Dalai Lama said society's dream should be a world free of nuclear and biological weapons.

He noted their danger _ and their expense, saying some African states have an abundance of weapons, but not enough food.

Also Sunday, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg gave the Dalai Lama the key to the city, calling him "a moral beacon to millions around the world, with a clear and constant voice for human rights."

The Dalai Lama fled Tibet in 1959 following an aborted uprising against Chinese rule in the territory and now keeps an office in exile in the Himalayan town of Dharmsala, India.

How is that ironic? He fled from a country ravaged by war, and now he speaks out against war.

ls is suggesting that Tibet might not be under Chinese rule if they weren't so peaceful.

True or not, I agree with the Dalai Lama on this one.

Edit: Why? because I've recently turned over a new leaf and am now a religious nutball.
Seriously - no kidding - God's honest truth -etc. etc.

Re: Dalai Lama Tells U.S. Crowd War Outdated

he says "War Outdated"

how well has it been working for him?

he left his people (Tibetans) like a little bitch and is now preaching behind a military of freedom.

IMO there will always be War.

It'd be cool if more people took the lessons of Mahatma Gandhi to heart - non-violent protest can work.

And that violent protest usually has the exact opposite effect--makes the problem worse and doesn't solve anything.

Sure, but it will be with the knowledge that I am promoting violence. In any case, I would attempt escape before harming another. If I had to harm another, it would be only so far as needed to escape.

Gandhi didn't use violence, even when violence was used against him. I think there's a strong lesson to be learned there. I'd like to hope that I could have the courage and will to act like he did under violent oppression.

Non-violent protesters sometimes face the same risks of death and dismemberment as violent soldiers.

A friend of mine from Zanzibar (Tanzania) described a relatively peaceful student protest he was involved in. Students gathered and marched to protest the ruling party stealing an election. Police gathered, said "disperse, or we'll shoot you". Students thought "rubber bullets, np". Police shot, students died.
He has told me that he would not hesitate to kill any policeman of his country.

Gandhi faced violence and responded in accordance with his principles. However, he also encouraged Indians to support South Africa in the South African War (around 1900) and to support Brittan in WW1. His rationale was that since he sought full citizenship for Indians, Indians should assume the responsibility of citizenship. He didn't encourage Indian participation in WW2, because he was engaged in a fierce struggle for independence with the British, who were none too forthcoming with the desired promises.

Many Indians died in his South African protests. British soldiers slaughtered many of the protesters who followed Gandhi in India.

Gandhi's struggle for Indian independence was long, hard, and bloody. In the end, he was assassinated by a Hindu wack-job - probably had something to do with agreeing to the partition of India into India and Pakistan.

Gandhi showed that a lot can be accomplished through non-violent means, but his victory was neither complete nor cheap.

I strongly suggest watching the movie.

Perhaps if all of the "good" people in the world stop attacking the "bad" people and don't put up a defense, bad people wil lcease to exist. Just like in Tibet, and Nazi Germany, and Communist Russia. Etc.
