Unknown mushroom found in backyard
    #4711910 - 09/25/05 09:56 PM (18 years, 6 months ago)

Can anyone help identify this mushroom which I find in my backyard which is was just put down. It only comes up at night or near dark and shrivels up during sunlight and /or heat.

I did a spore print and the color came out a rust like color.

My first thought is Conocybe, although Bolbitius is also a possibility. Is the cap slimy?

Happy mushrooming!

I agree it looks like a Conocybe species. It has the right characteristics and a rust brown spore print.

I am hoping it's Conocybe cyanopus but how do I tell which species of Conocybe it is? Can anyone tell for me?
Hoping it's this

It's highly doubtful that you have an active conocybe... They are very rarely found.
Those active conocybe species will typically (in most specimens) bruise blue at the base of the stem.
I'd say it's not anything worthwhile.

I've been picking wild mushrooms for a while and I don't have any desire to try exotic conocybe species. It's just to risky in my book. I'd stick to some of the easier to identify and well known mushrooms. Good luck.

most likely not active, but they still look cool, and there nothing wrong with having some more mushrooms growing around the house

No chance it's active. Given the slimy cap I'm inclined to go with Bolbitius vitellinus or one of its close relatives. Interesting mushrooms but nothing I'd consider putting in my mouth.

Happy mushrooming!

Conocybes are not for the average shroomer to identify. Many in that genus are poisonous, at least 1 fatally so. It takes a different kind of dedication to properly identify one of these without a good reference and lots of research.
Same goes for any LBMs, it's just too risky for most people.
