Large Button Mushroom ID Requested
    #4696862 - 09/22/05 06:59 PM (18 years, 6 months ago)

I'm kind of new to this but this one stumps me! My son found this large 3" button mushroom near a creek, deciduous trees, near a rotting tree in northern Manitoba. I thought it must be a Boletus of some sort as it's soft and spongy and has no gills. But Now I'm thinking it may be a button size Amanita so I'm not eating it! I cut it open and it's chocolate brown inside. It was growing wild but maybe domestic spores got there somehow? Any ideas anyone? Thanks! Mushroom

chocolate brown all the way through?

if so, maybe some kind of puffball... if not it's too young for me to tell what it is.

Thanks. It has a skin that tears with fibers inside. I believe you're right, it does appear to be a puffball and I'm surprised I didn't see that.
