Choose Your Own Adventure
    #4714261 - 09/26/05 03:00 PM (11 years, 2 months ago)

I loved Choose Your Own Adventure books as a child; I even programmed one on an Apple IIC.  I was obsessed with doing things RIGHT, and the tidy way the stories were set up allowed for several "right" choices, and a few dreadfully "wrong" ones.

The best part was, you could start from the beginning again, this time with the knowledge that choosing to investigate the dark cave resulted in being bitten by the vampire.  At that turn of the story, I could apply my wisdom & take the long way around.

Last night I was thinking about the big question: why am I here?
The cover of one of my old Choose Your Own Adventure books popped into my mind...and it made perfect sense to me.

Perhaps there are a limited number of "outcomes" in our particular lives, and we can choose more or less wisely, depending on the Adventure we want.  We can go back to "page one" and move forward based on the education we receive from our negative experiences, or we can hurl the book across the room after the vampire gets us yet again.

Whatever is going on in my life right now is a combination of the story I picked up, the options I can perceive, and the ability to both choose and learn.

God damn vampires! Always turning me into one!

I'll probably restart tomorrow, hopefully I figured it out enough to stop the vampires from getting me again!

but for your post, good job man, I like the way you think!

4) We need a smaller, less-intrusive government.

But life is much more flexible then written words (as resulting answers). That is what dissapointed me on those 'adventures'. I always want to add a 'but', what is not possible.
Life is more kind of an interactive adventure, where even 'buts' are computed

Yes!  A most complex and fascinating adventure it is.  Much more responsive to our choices than a book could ever be.

one thing thats for sure: life is the ultimate choose your own adventure game.

will you climb the mountains of malaysia? sail the seven seas? will you dedicate your life to war or to peace? will you risk death for excitement, or risk life for security?

i love it. every day is a new page turned.

i have had similar thoughts to your original post btw.

Maybe we get to sample and try every possible out come. We get to try the whole range from murdering sociopath to saint and pillar of virtue.
