I freaking hate spiders! Those things make me bug the fuck out! Look at this one that I took a pic of awhile back. I think it's a banana spider. It's huge!

I doubt you'll have too much of a problem with those nasty guys, then. Is that the first one you've seen inside?
We had a MAJOR infestation of these big guys in my area about 7-8 years ago. I never saw one before then, and haven't seen one since. For reasons unknown, they were literally EVERYWHERE for a summer. It even made the papers. You couldn't walk anywhere in nature without getting a few of them on you

no, but it will hurt like hell and could rot out the skin directly around the bite. Spider bites are nasty!

Yeah, I was referring to the venomous ones. Like brown recluces and the house spiders. That one didn't really look like a wolf spider, to me.

No I don't think that one's a wolf spider, either.
And yeah, it's the Brown Recluse that causes the rotting wound (necrosis).

They are very nasty bites! I saw a guy that had neglected his bite for about 2 weeks and the eggs were close to the hatching stage. He almost had gangreen before the doc went in and cut a huge chunk of his leg out. It was crucial looking!

Eggs? They don't lay eggs in your skin, or at least that isn't why the wounds turn necrotic.
Brown Recluse spiders have a unique component in their venom, called SMD, that directly attacks living tissue and causes it to turn necrotic.

Really? I was under the impression that they lay eggs into the wound. I'll look it up.

Quote:
The venom of Loxosceles species contains sphingomyelinase D, a wholly unique venom component in the animal kingdom, says Hernan F. Gomez, MD, a University of Michigan researcher in spider bite toxinology. He and his colleagues have developed an immunoassay capable of detecting Loxosceles venom for up to a week after envenomation.
Here's what often happens: People experience pain or tenderness several hours after the bite as SMD starts to trigger tissue damage. This can last up to six months. Most bites are uneventful. A minority develop the dermonecrosis that has made the spider famous.
In these cases, a bluish sinking patch with ragged edges and a surrounding redness appears within 24 to 72 hours, says William V. Stoecker, MD. He described clinical aspects at an arachnidism symposium that Vetter organized as part of June's American Arachnological Society meeting. This is the "red, white and blue sign." Bruising may spread along lymphatics, or with gravity. Often there is a central blister.
