Air pump question (not the usual)
    #4712036 - 09/26/05 12:19 AM (12 years, 6 months ago)

I am looking for a small air pump that sucks air in as opposed to blowing it out. I know that all pumps have an intake but I am looking for one especially designed with an input for sucking in air. Anyone know if something like this exists? It needs to be relatively small too. Like <5 CFM.

What's it's intended purpose, if you don't mind me asking?

Well since you ask... I am using it to create air flow in a single tub setup. Basically I want to create a small "breeze" running through the terrarium.

Have you looked into a "mono tub" with polyfil stuffed holes?

I was originally intending to use a fan of some sort in a sealed tube, but I thought maybe an air pump would be more efficient.

anything that pumps air will suck it from the other end...

(oh jeez, the OTD regulars are gonna have a field day with this post)

That may be too much air flow which will bring down the humidity. If you just use some polyfill or Tyvek stuffed holes in the side of your terrarium and you have at least some air movement in the room, it will be sufficient for air exchange.

i had an idea for terrarium ventilation, but never tried it... suppose you drill a small hole in one side of the terrarium, near the bottom, and another one on the other side, near the top...

as co2 collects in the terrarium, gravity should let it fall out of the bottom hole, and at the same time draw fresh air into the top hole...

if anyone makes a million with this idea, i want six bucks fer coming up with it...

Yea the humidity issue was a concern of mine too (thats why I wanted low CFM). This setup is slightly different than a regular tub though, and I am afraid the airflow will not be sufficient where it is in my closet.

I am going to have about 7-8 small tubes, about 5mm in diameter, coming from underneath the poo substrate. Kinda fanned out like a bloomin' onion. I will just place the poo around these tubes which will be about 2in above the surface of the casing. This will definitely get rid of the CO2 and if the container is air-tight will bring in fresh air through my polly-filled holes near the top.
