The flour or BRP or whatever you'd like to call it is FOOD and what the mushrooms need to grow. The casing layer is used mainly to hold in moisture. As for your baby mushroom farm...there are certain types of ants that grow fungus for food inside their anthills- maybe you should share your idea with them.
