inoculation with verm
    #4710674 - 09/25/05 04:22 PM (18 years, 6 months ago)

does anyone ever use a verm layer with corn before? i used a verm layer with 12 half pint jars. when i placed the verm on the corn it kinda got between the corn and on the side of the jars and im afraid that when i inoculated them the verm may have soaked in the spores by the verm... does anyone know if these 12 jars are hopeless?

Who knows ?

Do you shake your jars during colonization ?

Then how will the verm. work as a contam barrier. As soon as you shake it , it will disperse into the corn. Won't be on top anymore. It'll all mix up with the corn.

thats what i mean .. it already got mixed into the corn before i inoculated. that is what i am wondering if the verm soaked up all the spore water. its only been three days since i did that but no signs of mycelium yet i was gonna wait till wednesday for some growth and if not then its probably a lost cause

i understand the verm will get all into the corn once i shake the jars but im just wanting to know when i actually inocculated the jars since the verm was all over the place in the jars if the verm may have just soaked the spores up? i mean if that happened then there wont be any colonization right?

You're OK if that's your concern. Some of those spores will make it to the corn. A lot of peeps mix verm in with their grains. I use 20% verm. with my straight Rye jars.

Are you sure you can boil corn the way you plan on doing ?

lol.. yeah you just soak the corn 24hrs then you boil the corn. once it comes to a rolling boil you turn the gas to low for a low simmer for 45mins then you strain the corn and let dry 30 mins but at 15 mins you shake to make sure the water drains .. then you rinse the corn in the strainer for a few minutes to get all the starch out then let dry 15 mins and then you put the corn in jars and pc them.. i just tried my first grow with corn and it worked great. you should try the corn method its very cheap..thanks for your answer to my q i was freaking out .. so you think my jars will be okay and colonize then?

I'm sorry. I feel like such a fool. I was responding to you and another post . In the other post the fellow plans on sterilizing his corn with a one time boil. That won't work, will it ?

Isn't corn supposed to be PC'ed, fractional sterilization at least ?

Your jars should be fine

It can take 5 - 7 days to see growth when using multi-spore inoculation.

I'm really happy with my choice of grains and substrate.

I use WBS for spawn.

Straight Rye with a little verm. for fruiting grains. Mix a few other little goodies in there also, lol.

I'm trying some 50$ poo,25% WBS and 25% rye. I'm gonna case these as soon as they colonize. They're colonizing good, but slow. Poo may colonize fast when spawned with WBS, but sure does take it time via LC.

to be honest i am not sure that will work. cause if you do not soak 24hrs or simmer for the 45 mins . you may not have the correct moisture in the kernels cause when you soak 24hrs that allows the shell of the kernel to soften so when you simmer the kernel expands double its size and when u squeeze a kernel it will burst .. i think if he just boils one time it may work but may have to boil for anywhere from 2 - 4 hours? not sure though...i may have to try that... let me know what the thread is called i would like to keep an eye on his progress

I don't mean for achieving proper moisture content. Assume he does. He wants to sterilize by boiling for 2 hours. Not Pc'ing them or fractionally sterilizing them.

okay .. i just checked my 12 half pint jars of corn and 5 are showing mycelium and the other 7 nothing yet... but since i inoculated them anywhere i could in the jar. could those 7 be colonizing in the center of the jar and not by the sides?
