Filter inside spawn jars?
    #4710323 - 09/25/05 05:03 PM (11 years, 2 months ago)

Are tyvek, polyfil, or dry verm my only choices? I am doing the popcorn tek and they have already soaked for 24 hours and my jars will be ready to be sterilized shortly, but I gotta figure out something to use on the inside. Will two coffee filters on the outside not suffice?

no they won't suffice, coffee filters are not bio-filters. contams can easily pass through them.
you have a couple bucks to run to wallyworld or kmart or any store that sells craft supplies and get some polyfil or run to the post office and grab up a bunch of priority envelopes made from tyvek.
i haven't seen anyone use a dry verm layer on popcorn cause it is like the other shakeable grains. i guess you could though if you aren't worried about shaking. give it a shot.

best of luck
:peace:

Those are your only options I can think of, except for an actual filter top. Coffee filters won't do it, I wouldn't try that. Poly Fill is easy; just drill a 1/4" hole and stuff with Poly Fill (for future grow)

I will run to walmart and get some polyfil.

Bit off subject, but could you guys just confirm that this process is correct?
Once I have heated, soaked, then boiled popcorn:
Fill jars
put holes in top
fill holes with polyfil
place coffee filters over top and secure with rubberbands
make sure lids are not on too tightly
place in pot with a towel on the bottom
fill pot with water, around half the height of the jars
boil them for a couple of hours?

thanks guys. to defend myself, i have read, but i just dont wanna screw up.

edit: i think i am missing a step with tape or tin foil. plz let me know. ty

check out those register filters at walmart a/c filter section... you can cut them into a circle and they work but you have to sandwich about 4 or 5 together... then just put foil over the top...  :stoned: ...

I've never used corn, but if it's like other grains, I don't think boiling is the way to go. You'll have to PC or at least attempt fractional sterilization.

Good Luck.

Well, once you stuff those holes and PC, you'll sterilize the polyfil too.
