But it would be pretty pointless to use filter disks for 1/2 pint pf cakes, they are usually used for quart jars.

Why is it pointless to use filter discs on 1/2 pint jars?
Aren't they at risk for contams too?

good question fantazee, an i'l tell you why,
because a verm barrier works justs a good, and why pay all that money for filter disks (for pf cakes)... you will only gain maybe 1 or 2 days on colonization + you would have to store your 1/2 pints in a humid incubator to keep them from drying out. And from what i've read around here, people are using 2 disks per jar 1/2 pint.... 1 to inocc. through, then another to cover up the inocc. holes, now lets say one wanted to make 24 pf style 1/2 pints, that would require 48 filter disks, for one batch. at fungiperfecti they sell for approx.$1.00 each. so your lookin at $48 right there, although they are re-usable for life. Micron-magic disks are considerably cheaper but can only be used a couple of times. I'm sorry, it is not 'pointless' to use filter disks for pf-1/2 pints , but it is not really practical either. If i works for you than go with it.

Actually, when using MM Filter disks for 1/2 pinters, you can use one disk to get two layers so that you can double seal the jar (once before inocc. and once after). If you just cut two circles from one disk you can easily take care of 24 jars with 24 disks. I spent $5.00 and got 25 disks.
As far as the verm layer; I am only using cooked brown rice (not BRF) with out the verm in the mix. Because of this I have some verm left over, so I mind as well use it for protective layers.
Also you really dont have to use more disk material to cover up the inocc. holes. You can use tape to cover them. When using the metal lid you have to have the holes open for gas exchange. But with the MMFDisks, gas exchange will take place in the areas there is no tape. So, you could even use 24 disks to cover 48 jars. Since you are going to get 25 for $5.00 you could effectively protect 50 jars.

Like I said, whatever works for ya. :)
I just wanted to add, I have never never ever used tape over the holes on pf jars, and never had problem with contams from not using it; the only time it will be a problem is if the jar is picked up/tilted/shuffled around helping the contam fall through. And also a good alternative to 'sticky messy tape' over the holes while pc'ing, is to use a peice of tinfoil 'under' the lid & ring, that way no water will get in to your verm layer + you can innocculate through the foil, then leave the holes open for it it breathe; This works well
Props to PF for the 1/2pint cake method
fuk the dinosaur shit..... take a 1/2pnt pf-substrate jar, stick it in a chopper/blender, grind it to cornmeal (props to oldtimer ;)..
All the spawn you will ever need.
Great for ordinary casings too!
sorry, gettin off topic here

Just to show more variations in the way people do things, dude only uses tape on the metal lids with no vermic layer and no filter things for his cakes. He has had maybe 2 or 3 out of 100 jars contam with cobweb mold(nothing else) like this.
