No, you should pasteurize it. How? Anyway you can get the temp above 150 for 30-60 minutes. Some people nuke 'em, some do oven bags in the oven, some do al foil in the oven, some do bags submerged/near submerged in hot water in a pot.

You can sterilize it if you want to, but I highly recomend pasteurizing instead of sterilizing, although lots of people do sterilize. You just make your mix, load it into jars/bags and pc. I think a lot of people do this because they think it's easier.

Leaves beneficial microbes which hold harmful microbes (contams) at bay. Think of it like a house in the French Quarter. You evacuate the whole family, and who knows who might move into it? You evacuate the 3 little brats, their yappy mother, her little rat-dog, but you stay behind to make sure no contaminates, oops, I mean refugees....uh nope...displaced persons, yeah thats it, you make sure the displaced persons don't move in.

Neither peat nor verm are sterile in the bags. Particularly peat.
Verm in theory at least gets hot as hell when manufactured, but is not necessarily handled in a sterile manner while being stored, packaged, and shipped. Peat is incredibly rich in all sorts of microorganisms.

Casing layers should be left with no source of nutes for anything, otherwise its just more substrate.

This is impossible. The casing materials themselves are sources of nutes for all sorts of organisms. The fact that casing materials are less nutritious to mushrooms than substrates are is what is meant by "non-nutritious" when referring to casing materials. Not that nothing can live on/off of them.

I'd be glad to provide references for any of this if you would like...
