No, you have to use spawn of some sort. Spawn to birch or alder chips

You can use the cakes as spawn, but I've never heard of someone going from inoculation to fruiting with just the cakes. Whole grains would be better suited to grow Pans.

Pan Cyan isn't a wood loving mushroom. Spawn to h/poo.

If you have not grown cubensis yet, I recommend starting with them before pans.

yes i have grown cubensis previously. reason i ask is i have a syringe of cyans lieng around that i dont want to go bad. ok so i was doing some reading. the thing i dont want to use is manure if i can avoid it thats realy the reason for this post. some have recomended straw as a substrate. i also have alot of cedar chips around any other recomendations on substrates not involving use of manure?

The only substrate I've ever seen Pans grown on is dung.

what's wrong with manure? it doesn't stink or anything like that and you will get some great shroomies. its mostly straw/hay anyway, if ya don't want to prep it yourself you can always buy it or trade for some.

Copied and pasted from Ralphster's site:

Habitat: Growing scattered to gregarious in manure heaps in the tropics and neotropics of both hemispheres.
Distribution: Cosmopolitan, In dung in fields and pastures in Hawaii, Louisiana and Florida (United States); Mexico, Brazil, Bolivia (South America); The Philippines, Eastern Australia, India, Bali, Southeast Asia and other similar locations.
Comment: Although this is a manured mushroom and Paul Stamets reported this species in horse manure from Florida and found specimens growing in Tenino, Washington, the author of this guide has never collected this species in fields where horses dominate the pastures. Only in gaur, cow and buffalo manure
