popcorn doesnt turn as weird of a color than rye, popcorn is cleaner. Popcorn seems to retain water better than rye as well, although its slower to colonize.

Ive found that rye, wheat and any other hard grain is the best if properly prepared. Second best (for me) was whole grain rice cooked to fluffy perfection in a rice cooker, stuffed into jars and colonized.

whole grain ... err... long grain is that I meant -- white rice works great too and is cheaper.

I have to disagree. Popcorn has colonized faster than just about any other grain I've tried and it breaks up nicely during spawning.

On the slimy issue.  Popcorn seems to be clean clear and not really that slimy...  I'm using cracked corn for the first time as we speak(LC 2 days ago...mad growth  ) and this stuff was slimy as all hell.
Soaked it ... rinsed it,  boiled it for a wile , rinsed it, boiled some more, rinse, soaked till water was cold, rinsed again.... every time it seemed to be slimy until i rinsed it.  the last time though it wasn't too bad.
