Outdoor Beds/Patches?

Ok, I've been wanting to experiment with growing different species outdoors. I'd like to setup a bed of azures sometime, but I was wondering what species are the easiest to grow outsides? I was thinking about stunzii or something but I don't know how to go about it. Any highly active species would be of interest to me, but so would any easy to grow active species. Any recommendations?

I suppose the answer to your question depends on where you live. If you're in the subtropics, cubes of course. If you're in a temperate climate, I'd recommend Ps. cyanescens over all the other ones because it seems as though the mycelium is less picky about what substrate to grow on. Just make sure you use the right type of woodchips...

Any temperate woodloving species will work fine. I'd go with azures, cyans may not be as picky, but when it comes to yeilds, I haven't seen a man made cyan bed even come close to a man made azure bed. Also you may want to consider fimentaria, workman had great outdoor sucsess with this species.

I'll probably try growing azures and maybe some cyans... what time of the year can you put out a bed for azures? I know the temp needs to be around 50?, I was thinking of making the bed towards the end of winter... I live in kentucky

I'de go with cyans, and azure's just for a bit of variety. And I'd throw some cubies in a bed aswell, you don't need to live in the sub tropics for them to grow in a man made bed. Hell I live in a sub-desert climate and I had a good producing outdoor bed.

I was thinking about trying some B+ cubies outdoors... seams like those things will grow no matter what : ) I guess I'll go with cyans and azures both, what the hell. What would be the best time of year to start the beds out? I live in a temperate climate.

In PA successful outdoor azure patches can be started as early as late April and as late as mid June with good results in Nov/Dec.

I haven't grown outdoors before....seems kinda tough. ANyway. I've read about it a bit. Question. If you lay a patch of azures of cyans 1 year will the patch grow out year after year if taken the proper precations. Just wondering. I've seen wild shrooms come up year after year in the same area. Thanks

>If you lay a patch of azures of cyans 1 year will the patch grow out year after year If you add fresh material to the patch and if you expand it each year, it can fruit for many years.

I have posted this question before with only limited response. In the N.E. where winters aren't tempered by moist Pacific Ocean winds the winters can become rather harsh with the frost line going several inches below the ground. What is the safest way to winter over your patches? Well covered with straw and leaves?

Add a deep mulch of wood chips or bark. Then cover it with a tarp and hope for the best.

How about Pan cyan or Pan trop. I think it was Ralph who had great results, maybe it was someone else though. Start in spring or summer for a late spring/summer harvest.
