First Grow: Huatla
    #4705503 - 09/24/05 04:00 PM (11 years, 3 months ago)

So after a couple years of half-thinking about growing mushrooms I finally decided to go for it. I'm following PF Tek using BRF and all that.

I chose the "Huatla" strain and upon receiving the syringes they appeared as if they might've already germinated, clumpiness etc. I inoculated six half-pint jars earlier this week on Wednesday evening.

The jars are in a rubber maid terrarium with a heater that keeps the temperature around 81 degrees Fahrenheit, never dropping below ~65 degrees.

I've started to see some white fluffiness around the inoculation sites, yesterday there were only two tiny colonies in two separate jars but I count approximately 6 different sites this morning. I'm not certain if this is mycelium, it seems somewhat like the fluffy mycelium but it also seems a bit like the example pictures of Bacillus in TMC. I'm also a bit concerned the cakes are too wet...

Wow your jars look a bit strange. I dunno. Personally my jars never look like that. I think that it might be a bit too much water. I say let it grow for a while, and watch for signs of contams.

The cakes seem WAY too wet. Usually the myc will start growing at the inoculation points outward, if you have a bunch of little clouds that look like this:you may have mold. This jar was never inoculated, but grew this mold that looked kind of like myc and appeared in many different spots like you describe.

BTW, where did you get the spores from?

I got the spores from Sporeworks, the jars have pretty much looked like that (except without the white bits) since they came out of the PC, so perhaps some water bubbled up into them during PCing.

Any way to dry the jars out a little?

For some reason I haven't had very good luck with spore syringes from them either. Lots of contams. None in the syringes I made myself! Try making yer own, I made a flow hood from wally world stuff under $50.

I would email them and bitch about the spores. Loosen the lid on the jars to let out some of the moisture. You could even take them off altogether if you have a dry top verm layer and just rubberband a coffee filter over the whole thing until it dries up a bit.

Alright, I bought a couple syringes all in similar condition, I'm quite a newb to the whole mycology thing. About all I have going for me is a love and respect of mushrooms and limited training in sterile culture from an epidemiology class.

So, before I talk to sporeworks... Here's a picture of a syringe (I ordered several, all in the same condition and having the same appearance). After thinking and reading more it could just be clumping.

But, the white growth is most decidedly at the innoc sites and the innoc sites alone, so for now I'll let the jars be (lid rings off and the cover lifted a bit) and try to dry them out a bit.

Either it's myc struggling against overly moist conditions, contams from the syringe or contams from my procedure.

I have a question too.
How muc water should be in a jar? I read in more teks that it's best to put 4 parts of substrate and 1 of water. I did this and had horriblre results (there might have been other reasons too).
