How do you know the right water content in your jars?

I have been posting a lot of question about jars lately because something is not going well. Either they are too wet, cont or maybe too dry? I wanted to know how you could tell when your jars are too dry? I have had many of my jars look fine with good mycelium growth and then it stops growing and fades in color. Has anyone ran into this problem?
Looks like this

if you use anywhere close to the amount the recipe states, you won't be too dry... the problem you describe sounds like your jars are too wet, because dried out cakes will be noticably shrunken...
add more verm to your mix...

well the best way to know for sure if you have the right water content is to measure it out.
measuring cups are my best friends. That is one thing you don't want to eyeball. Once it is measured out and mixed, you can also do the squeeze test...only a few drops of water should fall out of the bottom of your hand.
you can tell if your jars are drying out when the mycelium starts to look more like a solid, almost like a solid piece of chalk.
If the jars stop growing, that is not necessarily a problem with moisture. You may just need to flip the jars on their heads to help gas exchange. This should start up your growth again.
If your jars are constantly drying out and you measured everything out. It could be a heat problem. This is seen a lot when heating pads are used. If there is too much dry heat, the jars can dry out fairly quickly. What you can do to help this, is to put a tub of water mixed with h202 in your incubator. This will bring up your RH levels so the jars don't dry out as much.
Hope that helps.
GL TO YA!

i agree with Mike. my first set of jars that i made , i split up into 2 groups. first group of 5 jars was squeeze tested til it dripped a few drops. the other 5 i made quite damp however no water dripped when squeezed. 4 out of 5 of the "wet" jars got conatminated even tho all the jars were sterilized using the boil/steam method for 75 mins. all of the "damp but not wet" jars colonized in under 3 weeks. the 1 "wet" jar took nearly 4 1/2 weeks to fully colonize. anyways this is just my personal expierence. results may vary.
