Concerns for to much water, and keeping nice temps
    #4702326 - 09/23/05 10:01 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

OK, i know im gonna get flamed for this....

My growing chamber is like 2x4 feet or so.
Im having a hard time keeping nice and *even* temps in it. The only problem, i HAVE to use a heating pad, because i really cant afford to spend more money on this....
I actually came up with a good idea, but its not efficiant enough. what i did was put my heat pad under one end of the translucent storage bin on high heat, and inside above the heat pad i put an aluminum baking tin thing full of water. This has been evaporating warm water keeping a basically even temp throughout the whole thing, but i dont think its warm enough, im not certain of temps as my thermometer broke...
any ways, I decided thats how I will provide humidity for my mushies once i have fruiting, but currently, Im just waiting for the mycelium to grow.
oh, and i experiance alot of warm air, but the bottom is cold, keeping the bags full of straw from having even temps throughout (cold on bottom warm in middle/top).
any suggestions for a more efficiant method using a heat pad? or even just a way to keep the cold floor (ots a hardwood floor) from keeping my stuff cold? Im thinking a few towels and a few layers of aluminum foil should insulate/reflect heat a good deal, but will it work properly?
and so you can save your energy, i know im half assing it, no need to tell me, cause i know, lol, and i would spend more money on this but i really cant right now....
thanks guys, i really appreciate any and all help.

first thing you need to do is get that 99 cent thermometer. then check your temp after a half-a-day without the heater on. then go from there.

btw you are taking about a FC and not an incubator, right?

temp wise.... i don't think it's recommended to use an incubator as a fruiting chamber at the same time. if you convert your incubator into a fruiting chamber after incubation is over with...that's fine. but optimally the incubator is the only one that should need heat(82-84 degrees).

you can buy a thermometer for 99 cents in the wal-mart pet section. the kind that you "tape" to the outside of an aquarium. there is also a pretty nice and cheap selection of them in the hardware section.

oh ok thanks on the thermometer.

and yes, i would just be converting it after incubation is through with.

you wouldnt by chance know if it is possible to cut open a heating pad and rearrange the wiring without doing damage, would you? by rearange i mean tape the wiring to the underside of a blanket to make the heat pad a different shape.

don't mess around with the heating pad unless you want to be homeless. if you're in it for the long run, get a submersible aquarium heater w/ thermostat from a pet store or online.

here's an idea for you, take your heat pad put it on your floor. next put 2 magazines ontop of it. and put your jars ontop of the magazines. to hold heat in, put a box over all of this.
