Most vermiculite is not contaminated with asbestos. However, the "vermiculite ore taken from a mining operation in Libby, Montana, is contaminated with asbestiform (asbestos-like) amphibole minerals, including the regulated forms tremolite and actinolite. It also contains forms that are not currently regulated, including winchite, richterite, and ferro-edenite. Research has linked all of the these forms to asbestos-related diseases."

yeah i went to Lowe's walmart home depot and another hardware store and they all told me its off the market. they did have this Schultz stuff claiming to be better than vermiculite. http://www.schultz.com/ProductCategories/Soilsamendments/MulitPurposeSoilConditioner/ think it would work okay?

I had a difficult time finding verm myself. I just ended up ordering it off the internet.

I got a whole freaking bushel for $12.

i live in Tx too and did seem to be hard to find. Not at Ace Hardware, Not at Walmart, but did find it at Lowes. its right by the Perlite and Orchid Mix and stuff. But if there are cows and live stock close by, its always worth it to look for a feed store. they have odd things you usually wont see on the shelves of walmart.

the Schultz soil conditioner should work. i'm guessing its something like "gro-rocks" or hydroton/hydron-ton/expanded clay pellets.
the grow rocks they use in hydroponic systems etc. or atleast some form of heat expanded rock. possibly similar to perlite? if it is in a "rock" or pellet/ball form, i'd soak it in water for an hour or so and then just sprinkle the flour onto the substrate while misting lightly with a spray bottle. or simply mix it all in a bowl then pour off any excess water.

i'd buy the smallest bag possible and give it a try.
i've heard of people using perlite and hydroponic grow rocks as forms of spawn substrate for casing , so anything is possible.
thats half the joy of mushroom cultivation. try new things, find the best way possible within your limits. ("limits" being the lack of verm. in your area.)
or take the simple road and order some verm off the net.

hope this is atleast a lil bit helpful.

GL!

EDIT:

Ceramic granules derived from 100% natural minerals
Improves drainage & aeration in compacted heavy soil, helps retain moisture & nutrients in dry, sandy soils
More effective than sphagnum peat moss and gypsum as Schultz? Multi-Purpose Soil Conditioner will not break down or compact and one application will condition soil for years
Also marketed as a replacement for vermiculite
Add to any potting mix for improved drainage, aeration, and root penetration

description of the product^

its in granular form.
so i'm pretty sure its similar to the "grow-rocks" and/or perlite.

look up "perlite substrate" on google or something and just substitute the perlite in the recipe with the schultz product.
