One of the best monopolies, ever..

They 0wn the spice & herbs industry. They run the whole damn show, and right underneath the nose of Uncle Sam.

I couldn't think of a better product to monopolize and get away with it. :strokebeard:

A monopoly isn't determined by it's prices, genius. A monopoly is simply exclusive possession or control of an aspect of market. It has NOTHING to do with prices.

Spice Islands seems pretty prevalent. Though, for all I know, they buy their spices from McCormicks (I don't know).

As far as prices: they don't seem all that high 'till you go to the Indian grocer and buy a lifetime supply of cloves (not that their shelf life is that long) for less than a puny bottle from the supermarket.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spice_trade

Very interesting article. Check it out if you get a chance.

The spice trade has been of major economic importance throughout human history and it particularly helped spur the Age of Exploration. The word spice derives from the Latin 'species', which in its later history came to mean goods or products, often of small volume and high value [1]. Spices brought to Europe from distant lands were some of the most valuable commodities for their weight, sometimes rivaling gold.

Trade in the East Indies was dominated by Portugal in the 16th century, the Netherlands in the 17th century, and the British in the 18th century.

I bet they're owned by the same parent company. It's just a guess though. McCormick probably doesn't sell it's spices to any franchised restaraunt.
