A hypothetical question...

30 minutes ago every major city across the world was hit by a nuclear strike. You have survived the initial blasts and now need to start your long term survival plan...what do you do?

Strap on two pistols and take a rifle to the car. Hop in a ride and drive over to the Hummer dealership. Steal an H1. Load up all the rest of the keys in the dealership. Find people I know, or those I don't who seem to have their head on straight. Ride to the gun stores and raid them. Head to the pawn shops and jewelery stores and take all the gold, silver, platinum, and jewels we can.
Set up shop in the nearest hospital. Send teams to hold down gas stations, grocery stores, and WalMart. Send out scouts and recruiters(to find scientists and military leaders). Allot Hummers to proper people. Once the situation is assessed, continue stockpiling of weapons, transportation, profitables, and basics and formulate a plan for further actions.

Pretty good plan. I'd probably do the same except concentrate more on food and shelter....fuck all the jewelry shit.

Unfortunately after a nuclear strike there would be no electricity...hence no power to the pumps to fill said hummers...and that is assuming that they would even start.

focus on finding drinkable water, and food, try to find some fellow humans, and some good animals, get plenty of guns, ammo, knives, crossbows, and find a nice underground bunker, or silo to hold up in.

Plan two. Gather 20+ people, get guns and ammo, and head to a military base. Take it over or die trying. If successful there would surely be transportation that withstood the EMP. Continue as stated in plan one.

Why would you want to do that? Why do most people include violence in their responses?

In my situation and current geography...I live close to the mountains, and also quite a few ranches and farms in the surrounding area...I would grab those I care about and whatever basic supplies I could..tent, sleeping bag, rifle, ammo, dry food etc...then get horses...barter for them preferably, but if I had to steal them, I would. Then head straight into the mountains...I know enough about the outdoors to be able to survive as long as I had sufficient ammo to hunt with. Over a period of time I expect i would have established a 'base' or some type of semi-permananent shelter next to a fresh water (preferably from an underground spring)

How much fresh water or edible food do you think there would be if every city was hit? I am under the assumption that there would be next to none. That is one reason I would gather scientists.

There would be next to no fresh water...which is why I would rely un an underground spring for water...as for food...I would assume that most of it would be poisoned by radiation, although I can't say if canned food would be affected, since I honestly don't know much about the effects of radiation.
Where would you find these scientists that you speak of?...hanging out at the walmart waiting for you to guide them?

Go on a rampage, stealing anything valuable, looting all stores for anything potentially valuable, steal some horses and a carriage, load it all up and escape to the countryside. Take as much food, water, weaponry, tools, materials, valuables, etc. as possible with me, then take refuge in some secluded mansion.
Or I'd join up with daimyo.

Distilling water will, as far as I know, remove any contaminants from the water (especially if double distilled) including radiation.
Water itself cannot be made radioactive, so you only have to worry about radioactive particles in the water. Proper filtration should remove most of the particles, and distillation should get rid of the rest. One thing you have to be careful of is concentrated filter residue or water left over from distillation. They could contain potentially dangerous levels of radiation and should be dealt with accordingly.
