Why patch?
    #4699764 - 09/23/05 11:17 AM (11 years, 2 months ago)

Ok so i read that a casing layer should not be fully colonized...so whats the point of patching? Shouldnt you fruit as soon as you see some myc popping up rather then patching?

I always patch once then birth, but i am growing B+, a fast colonizing strain, if you patch once then birth I don't think you should reall encounter any problems and with experience you'll know when and how much to patch for further grows.

Some people patch just once and then fruit. You only patch where you see myc growing. The point is to let the rest of the myc catch up and colonize the casing layer more evenly which results in a more even pinset. You also patch the divets left after picking your mushrooms.

Sorry to disturb, but what does patching mean.
I haven't seen it mentioned before.

patching as used in the orignal post is laying a very thin layer of fresh casing mix over the first mycelium to colonize a casing. This is done to allow the rest of the casing to colonize so it wil all be right at (but not on top of) the surface at the same time.

As mentioned in another post, patching is also used to refer to repairing holes left from harvesting with fresh casing mix.

PM me with any cultivation questions.

I just looked at my profile and realized I had a website at one point in time on geocities, it's not there anymore and I have no idea what I had on it. Anybody remember my website from several years aga? PM if so please.
