Poll: GMOs or Organic food?
    #4699517 - 09/23/05 07:55 AM (18 years, 6 months ago)

Just out of curiousity, if you had the choice, how many of you would prefer eating GMOs (genetically modified organisms) and how many of you would prefer eating organic food?
GMO or Organic?
You may choose only one

I think most will prefer organic...GMOs are often better priced and are more available.

I was thinking it wouldn't be a close on either... but you never know.

I should've put an other option: I don't care.

i don't know how to edit that so too bad.

Seeing how a good percentage of food in the US is genetically modified, i think it'd be a good guess to say that people don't even really care, even though no long term study has been made on the risks of consuming GMOs.

If you are an American, you are already eating GMO food unless you cook all of your food from scratch and carefully source your ingredients. Even then, GMO genes have leaked into non-GMO food.

Here's hoping we don't poison ourselves!

I'm french, but in this country as well, alot of our food is genetically modified, and there's no way to know if what you're buying is genetically modified, and there is alot of contamination going on too.

But here at least we have people tearing down genetically modified corn fields, because that's the only way they can make themselves heard, since apparently the government has chosen its side on the matter at hand. There's really nothing being done to prevent the invasion of GMO in our food...i'm thinking the government is making itself alot of $$$ for that...

What I think is fucked up.. is that food is labelled "Organic" if it's grown organically, at least here in the states. GMO food has no labels. That's ass backwards if you ask me.

because organic food is natural. It shouldn't have to be labelled.. "This is natural"

Instead, the genetically modified food, should be labelled, that it is, in fact.. genetically modified. It's common sense.

Then of course, 99% of the items in the grocery store would have that GMO label on them. Why would it cost more? They have to print stuff on the label anyway.

ya i know, i think that's because companies know that if they label their products as being genetically modified, their sells will be reduced.
for some people, its more profitable to keep the masses uninformed.

I don't care that much, but a few things to consider:

Organic food is overpriced, and it's difficult to grow as much of it. Some of the benefits are greatly overexagerrated by the people selling organic foods. For example, the amount of carcinogens ingested through pesticides isn't very significant. A single cup of coffee contains the same amount of carcinogens as you get in an entire year of eating non-organic vegetables.

Is there really any good reason to believe that genetically modified food is dangerous in the long run? Sure, long term tests haven't been conducted, but that doesn't mean that there is a good chance that there are dangers. People haven't done any long term tests regarding the dangers of listening to mp3 encoded music, but I think we can all agree that it would be fairly paranoid to take such a risk seriously.

Genetic engineering sounds kind of scary, especially if you don't have a solid understanding of what it entails. But if you take a cucumber, and splice in the gene from carrots that makes them produce vitamin A, what reason is there to believe that will create some other kind of danger? I mean, maybe it does, but maybe the kind of distortion created from mp3 compression causes a weird vibration frequency that causes brain damage.

I think that a lot of the fear about genetic modifications really comes from paranoia of playing god, the kind of frankenstein paranoia that's been around for centuries.

Also, keep in mind that not all GM food are the same, or even related at all. A genetically modified organism does not have any traits that are exclusive to genetically modified organisms, other than the fact that humans were involved in modifying them. Each one is different. If one plant is modified in such a way that causes it to produce a toxic chemical, that does not mean that any other kind of modification is more likely to create toxic chemicals.

Nature has been genetically modifying itself since life began. Each organism is genetically modified from its parents. You are a genetically modified human. Mutations happen all the time, and the only difference between the natural ones, and the ones done in labs is that we did it ourselves, and we're doing things we intentionally want.

Basically, if you find a plant that's never been discovered, and eating it doesn't seem to cause any problems. No poisoning or anything like that, it's just as likely (if not more likely, because its genes do not come from organisms we already know to be safe) to cause long term problems.

With GMOs, we aren't doing anything to plants that they don't do in nature already. All types of genes move from bacteria to other organisms and visa versa everyday.
