anomolies with birdseed
    #469933 - 11/26/01 11:05 AM (22 years, 17 days ago)

Same syringes, same cc's innoculated into those jars, different jars. First batch of jars took off like crazy and showed signs of growth 2 days into the deal. Second batch is now 4 days into it and nothing, maybe even smelling funny. Second set of jars innoc. 3 days after the first batch. No signs of contams. The second batch sat in a cool/cold room for 4-5 days before innoc. First time with birdseed so I'm not sure what is a funny smell and what is not. Also, at what point do I take off the metal lid and just go with the filter discs which are under the metal lids? If I think it too moist in the jar should I go ahead and just take them off? First time using filter discs as well. Help appreciated.

In my understanding of what I have read about birdseed, it is more difficult to sterilize than say, BRF and some other substrates. But I assume your confident in your sterlization methods. Just a thought since I'll be using Finch Seed myself.

Jars are from the same sterilyzation (sp?) batch. We are talking about quart jars using Hawks substrate formula x 4 to adapt for the quart jar. 4 jars are the subject with 2 in the first innoc. round and 2 in the next.
