ThumpaCap, why would you even post, I suppose some want to get their post count up for whatever reason   Put the verm in a ziplock container (only about 2/3 or 3/4 b/c it will expand) and fill with water.  Pour off the excess water and put a piece of saran wrap over it.  Microwave for about 3-5 minutes, then let it cool.  It will take a while to cool down enough to use.

there are people who say it's not really important to sterilize the casing layer if the substrate is fully colonized. i agree with them. but if i decided to do it, i'd use the microwave. either as described above or in a plastic food container filled with water.

I have seen what your talkin about done before.. and I even found where. Check this out http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/22698 not too much info on that link but if you know pf tek its just a simple variation. Keeping the lid on with just a small crack for steam release would probally keep the tray from drying out. I'd say a dry verm layer wouldn't be effective as a contam barrier because the rising steam would just get it wet anyways (still would act like a casing). But you could always try it out. Its not like your project is completly doomed with out the dry verm layer you just need to be a little extra carefull.
