stalled jars-UPDATE-PICS!
    #4695327 - 09/22/05 03:21 PM (11 years, 5 months ago)

i have jars 75% done and they stalled. what can i do, i flipped them for 24 hours. What makes jars stall?

Also I just made another batch and I wanted to know what's the longest I should wait to see since of colonization?

------------------UPDATE-----------------------------------------------
Keep in mind this is my first try at growing, below is the picture of my "good side" of the jar.

The other side that I want the mycelium to spread to has already been occupied by soft fuzzy mycelium that didn't take a good hold and then stop growing and faded in color. Here is on overall picture of the side

Here is a closer shot of the border

By looking at the picture the left side is the previously side were the mycelium didn't take a hold. The middle is where it is the raw substrate materials and the right side is the rhizomorph growth.

---------------------------------------------------------------
Take a look at this jar- this looks like wet dirt but I'm guess it's contaminated. Has anyone had this?

Close up ...

make sure your holes aren't covered
the fungus craves oxygen and expells carbon dioxide
much like we do
when they use up all the oxygen available they can't grow anymore
that's why they stall
you turn them upside down because co2 is heavier than air
when you flip them the co2 can get out through the holes in the lid and fresh air can get in

i had jars stall recently, i'd alter the temperature, seems to "wake up" the mycelium

I have to agree with myconerd. I had 4 jars stall out around 90% colonization. My temps stay at 78 in the house. I placed two flannel blankets over the plastic container the jars are resting in, and allowed sunlight to hit the blankets (dark colored blankets) and they have slowly come back. Now the others that weren't near that 90% mark jumped up even more, some within 10-15% since adding the blankets 3 days ago.

I don't know if this is proven, hard-evidence or anything, but it worked this time, and if it happens again...I'm going to try it again.

temps of 80-84 are good. 82-84 is ideal for jars in my experience.

air exchange could be an issue as they said

but there could also be a contam competing in the uncolonized areas

or the uncolonized areas could be too wet or too dry

ive had more problems with moisture than ive ever had with air

nice, i recently removed two jars from an incubator because they had stalled, after removing them, they started growing again and are looking good, they were incubating around 85F, putting them at room temp dropped that temp to about 70F, which i'm hoping will be a good fruiting temp for this strain

i usually keep all my jars in a shoebox in a 80-85 degree area. the myc loves that shit and when they stall, i just turn them upside down.

those jars are contaminated... you get that black contaminant from a finger touch on the needle when innoculating...

the one with the weak looking whitish growth is probably contammed as well, with cobweb... can't see it too clearly, so i'm not 100% on that one...

I have been told before that it is somewhat normal to have some mycelium not grow and fade in color. Is this not true?

I do use gloves that are wiped down with alcohol before shooting up. Why is that cont are starting 3 weeks after inoculation?
