adding extra BRF to a casing
    #4695130 - 09/22/05 02:41 PM (11 years, 10 months ago)

when casing would it be good or bad to add some BRF to the substrate?

i would leave the casing layer nutrient free but mix in soem more food for the shrooms. could you get more flushes out of a casing this way?

real bad.

you don't want to add anything nutrious at the point of casing.

you already have colonized substrate...adding non colonized brf to it will make it contaminate.

I wouldnt advise it though it is mentioned in TMC

Supplementation at Casing (S.A.C.)
SACing is another method used to boost the nutritional content of the substrate. The materials used are soy bean meal, cottonseed meal, and/or ground rye, wheat or kafir corn grains. The fully colonized substrate is thoroughly mixed with any one of these materials at a rate of 10% of the dry weight of the substrate. The substrate and the supplements must both be clean and free from contaminants; otherwise contamination will spread and threaten the entire culture. High substrate temperatures should be anticipated on the second to third day after supplementation. With this type of nutrient enhancement yield increases of 1/2-2 lbs/sq. ft. are possible.

ok i was under the impression that casings would fruit until they were out of nutes
so i was thinking "why not add more nutes?"
but this is my first grow and i don't wanna mess anything up so i thought i'd ask

maybe i'll give it a shot sometime when i won't be so let down if i lose my crop
i'd hate my first experience to be a bad one so i think i'll play it safe for now
thanks a lot

sounds like SAC would involve breaking up colonized poo and mixing in the additive based on dry weight, if i understand that correctly, so would it be like crumble/casing WBS except with the added step of mixing in nutrients?

Perhaps if you did this in front of a hepa the casing material would stop contams from coming in and it would be a good method of boosting the casing...

I've actually tried this. One thing that's more true here is that necessity is the mother of invention. And how freakin' cool would it be if this worked! I did so many things wrong during ym first attempt that I thought if I got ANY caps, I'd be happy. I used a stalled cake to make a very simple casing, and after the first flush, sprinkled a little BRF on top. within two days I had a healthy pan of green mold.

yeah i would think so
seems like it would be a miracle if you DIDN'T grow mold
if i did it i would put it in with the colonized substrate then a non-nutritious casing layer
